J'avais ach'té une auto
Une jolie traction avant

Je me gonflais comme un boeuf

Mais vint septembre et je pars pour la guerre
Huit mois plus tard en revenant

Pour me rendre à mon bureau
Alors j'achète une moto
Un joli vélomoteur
Faisant du quarante à l'heure
À cheval sur mon teuf-teuf
Je me gonflais comme un boeuf
Dans ma fierté de bourgeois
D'avoir une moto à moi

Elle ne consommait presque pas d'essence
Mais presque pas c'est encore trop
Voilà qu'on me retire ma licence
J'ai dû revendre ma moto

Alors j'achète un vélo
Un très joli tout nick'lé
Avec une chaîne et deux clefs
Monté sur des pneus tous neufs

D'avoir un vélo à moi

J'en ai eu coup sur coup une douzaine
On m'les volait périodiquement
Comme chacun d'eux valait l'prix d'une Citroën
Je fus ruiné très rapidement

Alors j'ai pris le métro
Ça ne coûte pas très cher
Et il y fait chaud l'hiver

Je me gonflais comme un boeuf
Dans ma fierté de bourgeois
De rentrer si vite chez moi

Hélas par économie de lumière
On a fermé bien des stations
Et puis ce fut la ligne toute entière
Qu'on supprima sans rémission

Pour me rendre à mon bureau
J'ai mis deux bons godillots
Et j'ai fait quat' fois par jour
L'trajet à pied aller-r'tour
Les Tuileries le Pont-Neuf
Je me gonflais comme un boeuf
Fier de souffrir de mes cors
Pour un si charmant décor

Hélas bientôt je n'aurai plus d'godasses
Le cordonnier ne r'ssemelle plus
Mais en homme prudent et perspicace
Pour l'avenir j'ai tout prévu

Je vais apprendre demain
À me tenir sur les mains
J'irai pas très vite bien sûr
Mais je n'userai plus d'chaussures
J'verrai l'monde de bas en haut
C'est peut-être plus rigolo
J'y perdrai rien par surcroît

To get to my office,
I had bought myself a car,
A lovely front-wheel drive,
That zipped like the wind.
It was July '39,
I puffed myself up like a bull,
In my bourgeois pride,
To have a car of my own.

But September came and I left for the war,
Eight months later upon returning,
My eleven-horsepower lightweight requisitioned,
Streng verboten provisionally.

To get to my office,
So I bought myself a motorbike,
A cute little moped,
Doing forty kilometers an hour.
Astride my put-put,
I puffed myself up like a bull,
In my bourgeois pride,
To have a motorbike of my own.

It hardly used any petrol,
But hardly any is still too much,
Now they've taken away my license,
I had to sell my motorbike.

To get to my office,
So I bought myself a bicycle,
A really nice nickel-plated one,
With a chain and two keys.
Mounted on brand new tires,
I puffed myself up like a bull,
In my bourgeois pride,
To have a bicycle of my own.

I had a dozen of them one after another,
They were stolen from me periodically.
As each one was worth the price of a Citroën,
I was ruined very quickly.

To get to my office,
So I took the metro,
It doesn't cost very much,
And it's warm there in winter.
Alma, Iéna, and Marboeuf,
I puffed myself up like a bull,
In my bourgeois pride,
To get home so quickly.

Alas, to save on electricity,
They closed many stations,
And then it was the whole line,
That they did away with without remission.

To get to my office,
I put on two good boots,
And I made the round trip on foot,
Four times a day.
The Tuileries, the Pont-Neuf,
I puffed myself up like a bull,
Proud to suffer from my corns,
For such a charming setting.

Alas, soon I will have no more boots,
The cobbler no longer re-soles,
But as a prudent and insightful man,
I have planned everything for the future.

I will learn tomorrow,
To stand on my hands,
I won't go very fast of course,
But I won't wear out any more shoes.
I'll see the world upside down,
It's probably more fun.
I won't lose anything by it,
It's not funny right side up.
