Vor der Käfigtür
Es ist gelungen
Er ist gesprungen
Der weiche Gang geschmeidig starker Schritte
Der sich im allerkleinsten Kreise dreht
Ist wie ein Tanz von Kraft um eine Mitte
In der betäubt ein großer Wille steht
Wann kommt der eine Sprung
Dass ihm die Flucht gelingt
Die nahe Freiheit zu ihm ruft:
"Steh auf und spring!"
Nur manchmal schiebt der Vorhang der Pupille
Sich lautlos auf, dann geht ein Bild hinein
Geht durch der Glieder angespannte Stille
Und hört im Herzen auf zu sein

From my narrow world

When will I leap?
Glancing through the bars
My eyes have grown so weary, they hold nothing

And behind a thousand bars, no world
When will the time come for escape?

Nearby freedom calls to me:
"Get up and run!"
A man lies dead on the ground
Before the cage door

I have leapt
My lithe and powerful stride
Circling in the smallest of spaces
Is like a dance of strength around a center
Where a great will stands numb
When will that one leap come
That will allow me to escape

Only sometimes does the curtain of my pupil
Silently open, then an image enters
Passing through the tense stillness of my limbs
And ceasing to exist in my heart
