Che fa l'aria rimbombar.
E il meschino calunniato

Begins to whisper.
Slowly, slowly along the ground
Hissing in an undertone
It ripples, it buzzes,
Into people's ears
It enters dextrously
And heads and brains
It makes dizzy and swollen.
Coming out from the mouth
The uproar grows:
It gradually gains strength
It spreads from place to place
It seems like the thunder, the storm
Which in the bosom of the forest,
Goes whistling, rumbling,
And makes you freeze with horror.
At the end it overflows and bursts
It spreads, it redoubles
And produces an explosion
Like a shot from a cannon,
An earthquake, a thunderstorm
A general commotion
Which makes the air reverberate.
And the poor slandered man
Vilified, trampled
Under the opprobrium
With great luck he goes to die.
