She twisted her hands behind her
but all the knots held good!
but she writhed her hands 'til her fingers
were wet with sweat or blood
they stretched and strained in the darkness
and the hours crawled by like years
till now on the stroke of midnight

the tip of her finger touched it
the trigger at least was hers.

la route était un ruban de clair de lune
sur la lande violette
quand le brigand des grands chemins est venu chevauchant,

jusqu'à la porte de la vieille auberge.
Il avait un bicorne français sur la tête
une dentelle à son menton
un manteau de velours bordeaux
