L'ombra di mio padre due volte la mia,
Lui camminava e io correvo,
Sopra il sentiero di aghi di pino,
La montagna era verde.
Oltre quel monte il confine,
Oltre il confine chissà,
Oltre quel monte la casa di Hilde.
Io mi ricordo che avevo paura,
Quando bussammo alla porta,
Ma lei sorrise e ci disse di entrare,
Era vestita di bianco.
E ci mettemmo seduti ad ascoltare il tramonto,
Hilde nel buio suonava la cetra.
E nella notte mio padre dormiva,
Ma io guardavo la luna,
Dalla finestra potevo toccarla,
Non era più alta di me.
E il cielo sembrava più grande
Ed io mi sentivo già uomo.
Quando la neve scese a coprire la casa di Hilde.
Il doganiere aveva un fucile
Quando ci venne a svegliare,
Disse a mio padre di alzare le mani
E gli frugò nelle tasche.
Ma non trovò proprio niente,
Solo una foto ricordo.
Hilde nel buio suonava la cetra.
Il doganiere ci strinse la mano
E se ne andò desolato,
E allora Hilde aprì la sua cetra
E tirò fuori i diamanti.
E insieme bevemmo del vino
Ma io solo mezzo bicchiere.
Quando fù l'alba lasciammo la casa di Hilde.
Oltre il confine, con molto dolore,
Non trovai fiori diversi,
Ma sulla strada incontrammo una capra
Che era curiosa di noi.
Mio padre le andò più vicino
E lei si lasciò catturare,
Così la legammo alla corda e venne con noi.

My father's shadow twice my height,
He walked and I ran,
Over a path of pine needles,
The mountain was green.
Beyond that mountain the border,
Beyond the border who knows,
Beyond that mountain Hilde's house.
I remember that I was afraid,
When we knocked on the door,
But she smiled and told us to come in,
She was dressed in white.
And we sat down to listen to the sunset,
Hilde played the zither in the dark.
And in the night my father slept,
But I looked at the moon,
From the window I could touch it,
It was no taller than me.
And the sky seemed bigger
And I already felt like a man.
When the snow came down to cover Hilde's house.
The customs officer had a rifle
When he came to wake us,
He told my father to put his hands up
And he searched his pockets.
But he found nothing,
Just a souvenir photo.
Hilde played the zither in the dark.
The customs officer shook our hands
And went away desolate,
And then Hilde opened her zither
And pulled out the diamonds.
And together we drank some wine
But I only had half a glass.
When it was dawn we left Hilde's house.
Beyond the border, with much sorrow,
I found no different flowers,
But on the road we met a goat
Who was curious about us.
My father went closer to her
And she let herself be caught,
So we tied her to the rope and she came with us.
