I′ll tell it like it happened, it was Darius and Noland and me
Just a few po' boys trying to get up outta Missouri
Took 55 to Louisiana, stopped by the highway to eat
They both had crawfish, strictly chicken for me

They interrupted Clarence Carter with a strange-ass local show
They were sayin′:

The rain was comin' down, the wind was howlin′ outside of Slidell
It was the kinda night that makes you think the whole world′s goin' to hell
We got off on an exit ′cause we couldn't read the map so great
Near the Choctaw Motel, we parked to deliberate
When out of the bayou came a man like the lake had a tongue
He was right up on the glass, all yellow-eyed, black teeth, bangin′ on the windshield
Screamin' like a demon at the top of his lungs:

Free for you and all your friends, crawfish ′til the bitter end

Wade to where the shallows break

I was driving out of there as fast as a Camry could
But the interstate was flooded and I had to take the road through the woods
Bad move in retrospect, the road disappeared in the rain
And I stood on the brakes when I saw the sign: "Lake Pontchartrain..."
Darius was yelling that he saw somebody out in the swells
He jumped out runnin' and Noland was goin′ as well
"Come back!" Why the hell would they leave the car?
And that′s when I heard it, make no mistake -
The voices were calling them from under the lake:

"Come down to Lake Pontchartrain...
Come down to Lake Pontchartrain...
Come down to Lake Pontchartrain...
Come down to Lake Pontchartrain..."

The crawfish were screaming, the waves danced in time
My friends went in deeper, the water, it climbed
I watched in terror, the lake opened wide
And horribly roaring, it pulled them inside
That's how it happened, why would I lie?
There were no bodies, I′ve got none to hide
I'm just a boy, lost his friends in the rain

On a pris la 55 jusqu'en Louisiane, on s'est arrêté sur le bord de la route pour manger
Ils ont tous les deux pris des écrevisses, strictement du poulet pour moi
Retour sous les orages, la radio jouait du Southern soul
Ils ont interrompu Clarence Carter avec une émission locale bizarre
Ils disaient :

"Viens au Lac Pontchartrain
Repose ton âme et nourris ton esprit
C'est là que tu pourras voir tout ce que l'eau peut être"

La pluie tombait, le vent hurlait à l'extérieur de Slidell
C'était le genre de nuit qui te fait penser que le monde entier va aller en enfer
On a pris une sortie parce qu'on ne comprenait pas la carte
Près du motel Choctaw, on s'est garés pour réfléchir
Quand, du bayou, est sorti un homme comme si le lac avait une langue
Il était juste devant la vitre, yeux jaunes, dents noires, tapant sur le pare-brise
Criant comme un démon à tue-tête :

Gratuit pour toi et tous tes amis, des écrevisses jusqu'à la mort

Va jusqu'à la fin des eaux peu profondes

Je me suis barré de là aussi vite qu'une Camry pouvait aller
Mais l'autoroute était inondée et j'ai dû prendre la route à travers les bois
Mauvaise idée avec le recul, la route a disparu sous la pluie
Et j'ai freiné des quatre fers quand j'ai vu le panneau : "Lac Pontchartrain..."
Darius hurlait qu'il avait vu quelqu'un dans les vagues
Il a sauté et a couru, et Noland aussi
"Revenez !" Pourquoi diable allaient-ils quitter la voiture ?
Et c'est là que je l'ai entendu, ne te trompe pas -
Les voix les appelaient de dessous le lac :

"Viens au Lac Pontchartrain...
Viens au Lac Pontchartrain...
Viens au Lac Pontchartrain...
Viens au Lac Pontchartrain..."

Les écrevisses criaient, les vagues dansaient au rythme
Mes amis sont allés plus loin, l'eau, elle montait
Je regardais avec terreur, le lac s'est ouvert en grand
Et rugissant horriblement, il les a aspirés à l'intérieur
C'est comme ça que ça s'est passé, pourquoi mentirais-je ?
Il n'y avait pas de corps, je n'ai rien à cacher
Je ne suis qu'un garçon, qui a perdu ses amis sous la pluie
