Me levava às querendonas

Sentava-lhe um cogotilho
Fogoso para um floreio
Mansito para um idílio
Por noites de tempo feio
Certo no rumo ou no trilho
E até recordo um enterro
Em que um taura ia pra toca
Ao tranquito, acompanhando
Meu zaino ia se ladeando
Pra um selim de chinoca

Foi um amigo que eu tive
Este zaino requeimado

Nele, firme no lombilho
Eu me sentia um caudilho

That Bay Horse

Among the horses I owned,
There was a dark bay,
He was as good as a sin,
With hooves and reins, a lightning flash.
Beautiful for a ride,
Proud and tossing the bridle,
In every task of the field

He was famous, this fiery one,
Broken in by me,
Big ears like this,
Like lazy doves,
There are still tyrants because of his gallop,
Who still remember me.

The great lasso throws,
The ones that stopped the Gauchada,
And the peeled hides,
More than to sight and arm,
I owed them to the great horse.

And how many times, creaking,
Saddle, stirrups, and rides,
He took me to my sweethearts,
On Sunday afternoons.

He was a friend I had,
This dark bay horse,

An importunate longing.

On him, firm on the rump,
I felt like a warlord,
In the vanguards of the column.

At dances, at dawn,
Or even in some bar,
Tied to the platform, alarmed,
He called his entangled owner,
With the clarions of his neigh.
