Per cinque mesi ancora nelle trincee bagnate

Bombe sul monastero e sotto tanta gente

Era passato un mese da quella distruzione

Il 19 Marzo i carri all'albaneta
Saliti da una strada segreta
Furon tutti distrutti presso la masseria
E fù fermato l'attacco all'abbazia

Ma poi venne Maggio e la linea sfontada
Dopo quattro battaglie cassino è liberata
Si torna nei paese distrutti dalla guerra
La più disastrosa mai vista sulla terra

The war came in early January
The sound of cannons and mortars we did query
People fled the villages far away
Soldiers with machine guns in hand, they stay

The first battle to cross the Gari
Swollen river with mines and flares they carry
Almost eighteen hundred from the Texas division
Died and were blown away with no derision

Germans in position against British and Americans
Canadians, Poles, French, New Zealanders, Indians
Suffering is one, it has no color
One hundred thousand fallen with courage and honor

Cassino, Cassino, peace is over
So many soldiers have lost their cover
Up in the mountains, the cannons roar
Death and destruction everywhere we explore

For five more months in the wet trenches
Attacks, counterattacks with grenades and wrenches
Then on February 15th, quite in vain
Bombs on the monastery and many people slain

A month had passed since that destruction
For Cassino, the same repercussion
Fortresses flying, bombs without end
Nothing left of what did exist, my friend

On March 19th, tanks at Albanet
Climbed a secret road, they did not forget
All were destroyed near the farmhouse
And the attack on the abbey was disarmed

But then came May and the line was broken
After four battles, Cassino was awoken
We return to villages destroyed by war
The most disastrous ever seen on earth, by far

Cassino, Cassino, the cannons are now silent
The war is over, peace is now resplendent
In the mountains above, the flowers smell sweet
There are uniforms of all colors, a sight to meet
