Certa vez estive viajando por esse Brasil afora
Quando me vi no sertão
Numa estrada de chão, era tarde, umas três horas
De repente, meu carro quebrado
Fechei os vidros, deixei ali encostado

E ajuda eu fui procurar
Quando eu vi uma casa ali perto
O lugar era deserto
Pelo trilho comecei a andar
Fui chegando devagarinho
E quando vi estava pertinho
Por ajuda fui gritando

A casa parecia abandonada
A porta não estava trancada
Eu abri, fui entrando
Na entrada logo vi que alguém morava ali
Pois tinha uma cama velha
Duas panelas na prateleira
Num canto, um banco encostado
O fogão de lenha do lado

E a moringa era geladeira
De repente ouvi um gemido
Entrei e vi um velho caído
Que me disse com a voz estremecida
Meu filho, sente aqui do meu lado
Só ouça, fique calado
A história da minha vida...

Eu era um rapaz faceiro
Era o rei dos boiadeiros
Tinha vida pra dar e vender
Na viola eu era um açoite
Trabalhava dia e noite
Só não sabia ler e escrever

Me apaixonei por uma moça chamada Tereza
E no dia do nosso casamento
Dançamos até noite adentro
E eu fazia meus planos
Vou construir nossa casinha
Criar gado, criar galinha
Nem que demorasse muitos anos

Mas aí veio a tristeza
A minha querida Tereza
O filho não pôde suportar
Foi sentindo a dor do parto
E ai nesse mesmo quarto
Ela partiu e com Deus foi morar

Fiquei eu e o menino
Tracei ali o seu destino e jurei a ele estudo dar
Nem que eu tivesse o sacrifício
Se fosse pro seu benefício
Até sangue eu ia derramar
Mas quem tem Deus não se apura

Mesmo levando uma vida dura
Eu não podia me queixar
Eu era muito valente
O menino inteligente
Arroz e feijão nunca ia faltar
Me lembro como se fosse agora
Ele chegando da escola
No ultimo dia do ano

E com sua simplicidade me disse
Pai, eu quero entrar na faculdade
Pois é esse meu plano
E se foi para a cidade grande
Me deixando aqui tão longe
Para vencer no seu futuro
Eu fazia economia, trabalhava noite e dia
Para manter o seu estudo

Se passaram quatro anos
E eu na roça lutando
Numa vida muito dura
Mas ao céu eu agradeci
Pela graça que recebi
Pois chegou o dia da sua formatura

Vesti meu terno de estopa
Eu não tinha outra roupa
No meu pé, meu velho sapatão
Com as unhas sujas de terra
Pulei vale, cruzei serras
Pra ver meu filho receber a sua formação

Fui chegando na cidade
E com a minha simplicidade
No salão eu fui entrando
Quando vi meu filho do lado
Tava bonito, tava arrumado
E pro seu lado fui andando
Eu fui com os braços abertos
Mas na hora ele saiu de perto

Com uma cara risonha
Criticou minha roupa velha
As unhas sujas de terra
Falou que de mim estava com vergonha
Foi embora e me deixou ali num canto
Dos meus olhos escorreu pranto
E no meu peito uma grande dor
Pois ali me desprezava
Quem eu tanto ajudava

Do fundo do meu amor
Fui saindo do salão
Cruzei aquela multidão
Com o peito cheio de tormento
Então voltei pra essa casinha
Pra tocar minha vidinha
E esquecer meu sofrimento
Hoje, hoje estou velho, eu sei
De tanto que trabalhei

Da minha dor que mais parece uma ferida
O meu filho eu não vi nunca mais
Hoje deve ser doutor ou senhor dos tais
E eu aqui, no fim da minha vida
Mas vá, parte agora
E se um dia encontrar meu filho
Por essa estrada afora
Diga à ele que aquele terno de estopa
Que eu usei no dia da sua formatura
É o mesmo terno que usei
No dia que me casei

Com aquela que morreu para lhe dar a vida
E é com ele que eu vou para sepultura
Diga também que foi com aquele velho sapatão
Que eu trabalhei e tirei desse chão
O sustento do seu futuro
E as unhas sujas de terra
Representa o anel de formatura
De quem nunca teve estudo

E por fim, diga a ele que eu lhe perdôo
Que por Deus eu lhe abençôo
E não reclamo a minha cruz
Foi tão grande meu sofrimento
Mas não se compara em nenhum momento
Ao sofrimento de Jesus

The Ungrateful Son

Once I was traveling through this vast Brazil
When I found myself in the backlands
On a dirt road, it was late, around three o'clock
Suddenly, my car broke down
I closed the windows, left it parked there

And I went to look for help
When I saw a house nearby
The place was deserted
I started walking along the track
I approached slowly
And when I saw I was close
I was shouting for help

The house seemed abandoned
The door wasn't locked
I opened it, I went in
At the entrance I immediately saw that someone lived there
Because there was an old bed
Two pans on the shelf
In a corner, a leaning bench
The wood stove next to it

And the water jug was the refrigerator
Suddenly I heard a moan
I went in and saw an old man lying down
Who told me with a trembling voice
My son, sit here by my side
Just listen, stay quiet
The story of my life...

I was a cheerful young man
I was the king of the cowboys
I had life to give and sell
On the viola I was a whip
I worked day and night
I just didn't know how to read and write

I fell in love with a girl named Tereza
And on our wedding day
We danced until late at night
And I made my plans
I'm going to build our little house
Raise cattle, raise chickens
Even if it took many years

But then came the sadness
My dear Tereza
Couldn't bear the child
She was feeling the pain of childbirth
And then in this same room
She departed and went to live with God

It was just me and the boy
I traced his destiny there and swore to give him an education
Even if I had to sacrifice
If it was for his benefit
I would even shed blood
But whoever has God doesn't worry

Even leading a hard life
I couldn't complain
I was very brave
The boy was intelligent
Rice and beans would never be lacking
I remember it like it was yesterday
Him coming home from school
On the last day of the year

And with his simplicity he told me
Dad, I want to go to college
Because that's my plan
And he went to the big city
Leaving me here so far away
To succeed in his future
I was saving money, working day and night
To support his studies

Four years passed
And I was struggling in the fields
In a very hard life
But I thanked heaven
For the grace I received
Because the day of his graduation arrived

I put on my burlap suit
I had no other clothes
On my feet, my old boots
With my nails dirty with earth
I jumped over valleys, crossed mountains
To see my son receive his diploma

I arrived in the city
And with my simplicity
I entered the hall
When I saw my son next to me
He was handsome, he was well dressed
And I walked towards him
I went with open arms
But he immediately stepped away

With a mocking face
He criticized my old clothes
The nails dirty with earth
He said he was ashamed of me
He left and left me there in a corner
Tears streamed from my eyes
And a great pain in my chest
Because he was despising me there
The one I helped so much

From the depths of my love
I left the hall
I crossed that crowd
With my chest full of torment
So I returned to this little house
To live my little life
And forget my suffering
Today, I'm old, I know
From so much that I worked

From my pain that feels like a wound
I never saw my son again
Today he must be a doctor or a lord of sorts
And me here, at the end of my life
But go, leave now
And if one day you find my son
Along this road
Tell him that that burlap suit
That I wore on his graduation day
Is the same suit I wore
On the day I got married

With the one who died to give him life
And it is with it that I will go to the grave
Tell him also that it was with those old boots
That I worked and took from this earth
The sustenance for his future

Represent the graduation ring
Of one who never had an education

And finally, tell him that I forgive him
That I bless him by God
And I don't complain about my cross
My suffering was so great
But it doesn't compare at any moment
To the suffering of Jesus
