Romanç de na Roseta

Per Cotaina vaig passar:
Figueral a cada banda;
Hi havia pomes en randa
I vi blanc per refrescar.

De Cotaina vaig partir
Amb una fosca resolta;
Pes camí me varen dir:
"Bartomeu, na Rosa és morta".

No sé si ho feien a posta,
O per dàrem més tristor...
Uns me deien que era morta;
Altres, que estava millor.

A ca seua vaig anar
Demanant na Rosa nostra;
Això va ser per resposta:
"Na Roseta morirà".

Mentre pujava s'escala,
La pujava jo tot sol,
Ella es tapava la cara
Amb sa colga d'es llençol.

"Roseta, vos faig por,
Que sa cara vos tapau?"
-"Bartomeu, tens sa clau
Que travessa lo meu cor".

Sa mare li diu plorant:
-"Roseta, que estàs millor?"
Ella diu: "Mumare, no,
Que es meu mal ja va augmentant".

Quan s'havia de morir,
S'enamorat hi era a prop.
Li va regalar una flor,
Que just era un serafí.

Quan la duien a enterrar,
Quatre joves la portaven;
Tots quatre la festejaven.
Era cosa de plorar.

A l'endemà, de matí,
Va sortir de casa seua
I només va poder dir:
"Na Roseta ja no és meua".

Song of Roseta

In Cotaina I passed:
Figs on every hand;
Apples were in rows,
And white wine to refresh.

From Cotaina I set forth
With a dark purpose;
On the road the news they gave,
"Dear Bartomeu, our Rose is dead".

I know not if they said this
To make my heart more sad;
Some told me she was dead and gone;
And others said she was better.

To her house I went,
Seeking for our Rose;
And this was the answer they gave,
"Our Roseta is passing away".

As I went up the stairs,
I, being all alone,
She covered up her face
With the curtain of her bed.

"Roseta, you hid from me
And covered up your face?"
-"Bartomeu, you have the key
That pierced my heart".

Her mother said to her weeping
-"Roseta, are you better?"
-"Mother, no, I'm not,
My sickness keeps increasing".

When she was about to die,
Her lover was with her.
He gave her a flower,
Which was a seraphim.

When they were taking her to be buried,
Four youths carried her;
They all praised her,
And that was a thing to weep for.

In the morning after she died,
I went out of her house
And all I could say was
"Roseta is no longer mine".
