There was a dead silence
It's a pun! the king added in an offended tone, and everybody laughed

Let the jury consider their verdict, the King said, for about the twentieth time that day
No, no! said the Queen
Sentence first, verdict afterwards
Stuff and nonsense! said Alice loudly
The idea of having the sentence first!
Hold your tongue! said the Queen, turning purple
I won't! said Alice
Off with her head! the Queen shouted at the top of her voice
Nobody moved

Who cares for you? said Alice
She had grown to her full size by this time
You're nothing but a pack of cards!
At this the whole pack rose up into the air, and came flying down upon her
She gave a little scream, half of fright and half of anger, and tried to beat them off
And found herself lying on the bank, with her head in the lap of her sister
Who was gently brushing away some dead leaves that had fluttered down from the trees Upon her face

Wake up, Alice dear! said her sister
Why, what a long sleep you've had!

Ajouta-t-il en se tournant vers le Valet.
Le Valet secoua tristement la tête.
Est-ce que j'en ai l'air ? dit-il.
Ce qui n'était certainement pas le cas, puisqu'il était entièrement fait de carton.
Jusqu'ici tout va bien, dit le Roi.
Et il continua à marmonner les vers pour lui-même.
Nous savons que c'est vrai.
C'est le jury bien sûr.
Je lui en ai donné une, ils lui en ont donné deux.
Tiens, c'est sûrement ce qu'il a fait avec les tartes, vous savez.
Mais ça continue, ils sont tous revenus de lui à toi, dit Alice.
Eh bien, les voilà ! s'écria le Roi triomphant, en montrant les tartes sur la table.
Rien ne peut être plus clair que ça.
Et puis, avant qu'elle n'ait cette crise...
Tu n'as jamais eu de crises, ma chère, je crois ? dit-il à la Reine.
Jamais ! dit la Reine en lançant furieusement un encrier sur le Lézard.
Alors les mots ne te conviennent pas, dit le Roi en regardant la cour avec un sourire.
Il y eut un silence de mort.
C'est un jeu de mots ! ajouta le Roi d'un ton offensé, et tout le monde rit.

Que le jury délibère, dit le Roi, pour la vingtième fois ce jour-là.
Non, non ! dit la Reine.
La sentence d'abord, le verdict ensuite.
C'est absurde ! dit Alice à haute voix.
L'idée d'avoir la sentence d'abord !
Tais-toi ! dit la Reine, devenant violette.
Je ne me tairai pas ! dit Alice.
Qu'on lui coupe la tête ! cria la Reine à tue-tête.
Personne ne bougea.

Qui se soucie de toi ? dit Alice.
Elle avait atteint sa taille normale à ce moment-là.
Vous n'êtes rien d'autre qu'un paquet de cartes !
À ces mots, tout le paquet s'éleva dans les airs et retomba sur elle.
Elle poussa un petit cri, moitié de peur, moitié de colère, et essaya de les repousser.
Et elle se retrouva allongée sur la berge, la tête sur les genoux de sa sœur.
Qui enlevait doucement quelques feuilles mortes qui étaient tombées des arbres sur son visage.

Réveille-toi, Alice ma chérie ! dit sa sœur.
Comme tu as dormi longtemps !
