C'était un jour d'été comme on en fait beaucoup
Entre mer et garrigue au début du mois d'août

Et puis l'envie de voir si la mer était bonne
Je roulais par hasard entre Nîmes et Narbonne
Je me suis arrêté à Sète

Poussé par les voitures ou porté par les vents
Dans cette cité-là que l'on passe en suivant
N'importe quel itinéraire
À peine a-t-on le temps de quitter les faubourgs
C'est là le résumé de la vie le plus court
On se retrouve au cimetière

Le calme anonymat qui réside en ce lieu
Est celui que l'on voit chez les morts de banlieue
On chercherait l'extravagance
Aussi libre qu'on ait vécu décidément
On est toujours guetté par un alignement
Sauf de discrètes différences

C'est un pin parasol qui n'aura pas éclos
Tant viennent les amis piétiner cet enclos
J'ai peu d'espoir qu'il ne grandisse
Ils continueront donc de rôtir au zénith
Mais de tous leurs bouquets posés sur le granit
Pas un ne m'a semblé factice

Au milieu d'un essaim de touristes en chaleur
J'ai vu s'épanouir une petite fleur
Qui semblait marcher comme on danse
Avec deux seins de soie déguisés par un voile
Et l'ombre de ta croix n'a pas bougé d'un poil
Je me demande à quoi tu penses

À quoi tu penses donc laquelle as-tu choisie
Des ruses que les hommes ont trouvées jusqu'ici

Et les cris des enfants qui s'ébattaient dans l'eau
Quelque maître nageur sifflait un pédalo
Voguant vers l'horizon vacances

The Visit

It was a summer's day like we have many
Between the sea and the scrubland at the beginning of August

And then the urge to see if the sea was good
I drove by chance between Nîmes and Narbonne
I stopped at Sète

Pushed by the cars or carried by the winds
In that city that we pass by following
Any itinerary
We hardly have time to leave the suburbs
That is the shortest summary of life
We end up in the cemetery

The calm anonymity that resides in this place
Is the same that we see in the dead of the suburbs
We would seek extravagance

We are always haunted by an alignment
Except for discreet differences

It is a stone pine that will not have bloomed
As many friends come to trample this enclosure
I have little hope that it will grow
They will continue to roast on the zenith
But of all their bouquets placed on the granite
Not one seemed to me to be artificial

In the midst of a swarm of tourists in heat
I saw a little flower bloom
Who seemed to walk like we dance
With two breasts of silk disguised by a veil
And the shadow of your cross has not moved an inch
