Doña Ubenza

Inside I weep,
Though outwardly I laugh,
Such is the life I live
Until death claims my breath.
I yield to the wind's command,
For I cannot soar.
I gather my box
And begin to wander.
My people pray for me
From afar, in the mountains.
Time slips away, leaving no trace
As they pray and wonder why.
Echoing valleys of stone
Where the wind whispers.
It erases the traces of my pain,
Leaving only silence.
I cross myself just in case,
Lest God does exist,
And condemns me to hell,
Along with my sheep.
I do not know if there is another world
Where souls find solace.
I live upon this earth
Toiling all my days.
