A Mighty Fortress is Our God

1 A mighty Fortress is our God,
A Bulwark never failing;
Our Helper He amid the flood
Of mortal ills prevailing:
For still our ancient foe
Doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great,
And, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.
2 Did we in our own strength confide,
Our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side,
The Man of God's own choosing:
Dost ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth His Name,
From age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.
3 And though this world, with devils filled,
Should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed
His truth to triumph through us:
The Prince of Darkness grim,
We tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure,
For lo! his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.
4 That word above all earthly powers,
No thanks to them, abideth;
The Spirit and the gifts are ours
Through Him who with us sideth:
Let goods and kindred go,
This mortal life also;
The body they may kill:
God's truth abideth still,
His Kingdom is forever.

1 Une forteresse puissante est notre Dieu,
Un rempart qui ne faiblit jamais ;
Notre Aide au milieu du déluge
Des maux mortels qui prévalent :
Car notre ennemi antique
Cherche toujours à nous faire du mal ;
Son art et sa puissance sont grands,
Et, armé d'une haine cruelle,
Il n'a pas d'égal sur terre.
2 Si nous avions confiance en notre propre force,
Nos efforts seraient perdus ;
Si l'homme juste n'était pas de notre côté,
L'homme choisi par Dieu lui-même :
Demandes-tu qui pourrait être cet homme ?
C'est Jésus-Christ, c'est Lui ;
Seigneur Sabaoth est Son Nom,
De génération en génération le même,
Et Il doit remporter la bataille.
3 Et même si ce monde, rempli de démons,
Menace de nous détruire,
Nous ne craindrons pas, car Dieu a voulu
Que Sa vérité triomphe à travers nous :
Le Prince des Ténèbres, sombre,
Nous ne tremblons pas pour lui ;
Nous pouvons supporter sa rage,
Car voilà ! son destin est certain,
Un seul petit mot le fera tomber.
4 Ce mot qui surpasse toutes les puissances terrestres,
Non grâce à elles, demeure ;
L'Esprit et les dons sont à nous
Par Lui qui est à nos côtés :
Que les biens et les proches s'en aillent,
Cette vie mortelle aussi ;
Le corps, ils peuvent le tuer :
La vérité de Dieu demeure toujours,
Son Royaume est éternel.
