Kind Of Blue was written during the cool jazz era, a classic example of modal jazz;
This was the main concept running through the whole album,
expanding and transforming a series of distinct, open-ended spaces through the contributions of the other musicians.
The musicians who played on this album all later became major figures in jazz,
and Kind Of Blue is the peak of the Miles Davis Quintet,
every musician playing at the very top of their game.
Tenor saxophonist John Coltrane shared an intuitive understanding with Miles,
their symbiosis transforming into liquid melody,
both at their breathtaking best on the album's signature track, “So What.”
And alto saxophonist “Cannonball” Adderley,
bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer James Cobb, under Miles' guiding hand,
came together to create a masterpiece of controlled tension and virtuosic interplay.
