Orasul in cadril de mucava
Traia, infricosat, la cinema,
Iar strazile duceau poveri de soapte
Doar intre pauze. La cinci si sapte.
In piata cu celebru nume svab
Crestea, pana la cer, un baobab
Cu fructe cat o casa, cu bodegi
Si trenuri de sidef iubind prin crengi,
Cu gari albastre-n care stam zambind
La stravezii pahare cu absint
Si povesteam din viata, si radeam
De pestii care ne priveau din geam,
In seara-aceea-n care nori duiosi
Au oglindit latraturi si cocosi
Si medici de zapezi cu nume svab
Zicand langa bonavi, un baobab.

Destination With Baobab

A cardboard city in a square
I used to live, frightened, at the cinema,
And the streets led to whispers from soap operas
Only during the intervals. At five past seven.
On the square with the famous Swabian name
A baobab grew, reaching to the sky,
With fruit as big as houses, with pubs
And trains made of mother-of-pearl, gliding through the branches,
With blue carriages in which we sat, smiling
At transparent glasses of absinthe
And we talked about our lives, and we laughed
At the fish that watched us from the window,
That evening when gentle clouds
Echoed barking and cockerels
And snowy doctors with Swabian names
Saying next to the lanterns, a baobab.
