Der Rauch der in die Höhe steiget
Führt meinen Geist ins Sternenfeld
Durch's Feuer so jede Pfeif erneuert
Wird auch mein Geist mehr angefeuert

If you wish, you may delight yourself
with violets, roses, and jasmine,
or even sit in cesspools;
I do not understand this way of thinking.
For me, the most pleasant taste
comes from a fresh pipe of fragrant tobacco.

In times of plague and other evil times,
even when the devil is raging,
in times of hardship and misery,
when our ears are ringing,
a pipe of tobacco does more good
than all the quackery of doctors.

The ashes that my pipe produces
teach me the vanity of the world;
the smoke that rises high
guides my spirit into the starry field.
through the fire that renews each pipe,
