E damos por nós mesmos descobrindo que agora
Agora se calhar, já é um pouco tarde
E nas memórias velhas e secretas da menina
Mora sempre aquele sonho de ser
Bailarina, atriz, modelo, princesa, muito rica, eu sei lá
Mas os anos correram num assombro
E a vida foi injusta em qualquer jeito
Para a chama indelével que ainda arde
E os filhos, os filhos são bonitos no seu peito
Mas agora é que, pra certas coisas
Agora já é tarde
E nos papéis antigos que rasgamos
Há sempre meia dúzia que ainda guardamos
São os planos da conquista do Pólo Norte
Que fizemos um dia com sete anos numa tarde
E que estiveram perdidos trinta anos
E agora, se calhar, maldita sorte!
Não é que por desnorte, acaso ou esquecimento
Alguém já descobriu o Pólo Norte
E agora pronto, e agora pronto, agora já é tarde
Há sempre, sempre nas gavetas escritores secretos
Cientistas e doutores
Desenhos e projectos construtores feitos em meninos
De tudo o que sonhámos fazer quando fosse a nossa vez
Cientistas em busca de Plutão, arqueólogos no Egito
Viajantes sempre sem destino
Futebolistas de sucesso do caramba no Inter de Milão
Mas o curso da vida foi traidor
E o curso da vida foi covarde
E o ciclo do tempo completou-se, e agora pronto
Agora, agora já é tarde, agora é tarde
Emprego, casa, filhos muito queridos
Algum sonhar um pouco com amigos
Às vezes sair, beber uns copos pra esquecer ou pra lembrar
E fazer ainda, é claro, um certo alarde
Talvez para esconder ou para abafar
Como é já tão demasiado e impiedosamente tarde
Ah mas não, não, não pode ser assim
Nunca é tarde para renovar, nunca é tarde pra se sonhar
Nunca é tarde
Amanhã partimos todos para Istambul
Vladivostock, Alasca, Oslo, Dakar
Vamos à selva, eu vou a Timor abraçar aquela gente
E às montras de Amsterdam
Que eu afinal também não sou diferente
E chegando a Tóquio, companheiro
Chegando a Tóquio, são horas de jantar hein
É que ainda temos que voltar por Bombaim
Passando por Macau e Calcutá
Que eu encontro Portugal em todo o lado
E mesmo fugindo nunca saio de mim
E se esse marinheiro, galã, aventureiro, esse já não há
Pois que nos cumpramos ao menos agora até o fim
No que fazemos, na diferença do que formos e dissermos
E perguntando, criando rebeldias
Conferindo aquilo que acreditamos
E o que ainda formos capazes de sonhar
E se aquilo que nos dão todos os dias
Não for coisa que se cheire ou nos deslumbre
Que pelo menos nunca abdiquemos de pensar
Com direito à ironia, ao sonho, ao ser diferente
E será talvez uma forma inteligente de, afinal, nunca
Nunca ser tarde demais para viver

Eu tenho aqui um poema que escrevi num livro
Chamado: Das mulheres e do mundo
Bastante ambicioso, porque fazer um livro pra falar
Das mulheres e do mundo é precisamente impossível porque
Ninguém sabe nada nem de uma coisa nem de outra
Mas enfim, e nesse livro já, imaginem, talvez com uns dez anos
Tava-se a falar nessa altura da constituição europeia
Da nova constituição europeia, Europa, não sei que
E eu escrevi este poema com uma
Com uma atualidade enorme hoje em dia, suponho

Now Is Never Too Late

Each of us is born
With an artist inside
A poet, a sculptor, an adventurer
A scientist, a painter, an archaeologist
A stylist, an astronaut, a singer
A sailor
And dreams and distance, and time and longing
They gave us life, love, trouble, lies and truth
And we find ourselves discovering that now
Now maybe it's a little late
And in the old and secret memories of the girl
Always live that dream of being
Ballerina, actress, model, Princess, very rich, I don't know
But the years ran in a haunt
And life was unfair anyway
To the indelible flame that still burns
And the children, the children are beautiful on your chest
But now, for certain things
Now it's too late
And in the old papers we tear
There are always half a dozen that we still keep
Are the plans of the conquest of the North Pole
That we did one day with seven years in an afternoon
