Il était violet avec des yeux roses.
Ce qui même à Paris se remarque surtout lorsqu'on oublie de mettre ses lunettes de soleil et son passe montagne et de plus lorsqu'on prend l'ascenseur pour visiter la tour Eiffel.
Violet, tout violet avec des yeux roses, ça on peut le dire, c'est pas très fréquent.
Peut-être quelques libellules du Bengale et encore.
Des écureuils de Camargue, peut-être.
Peut-être, je dis et encore, j'en suis pas sûr.
Mais violet, vraiment violet avec des yeux roses, rose... fesses de bébé, je l'répète, c'est pas ordinaire surtout pour un lion.
Donc, Totor était à Paris depuis quelques heures à peine, il avait déjà trouvé le moyen de se faire remarquer.
Il avait dit à Paulette: sa lionne, je fais un saut jusqu'à Paris, je verrai la tour Eiffel, Léon Zitrone et les abattoirs de la Villette, tu vois je n'en aurai pas pour longtemps.
Prépare-moi un cassoulet de gazelle, mets au frais deux ou trois de ces explorateurs qui viennent faire des safaris photos et garde les coussins de leur jeep, ça peut toujours servir pour la sieste.
Vous ne trouvez pas qu'il a des yeux bien roses pour un lion dit un normand à sa femme et à sa belle-mère dans l'ascenseur de la tour Eiffel.
En effet, c'est bizarre rétorqua la belle-doche.
Totor se mordait déjà la patte d'avoir oublié ses lunettes dans l'avion de Nairobi.
Rose, c'est pas loin de rouge, c'est peut-être un lion communiste.
De toutes façons, hormis les yeux dit la belle-mère ceux de Jean Richard ne m'ont jamais parus aussi violets, c'est louche
Du haut du troisième étage, Totor regarda distraitement l'arc de triomphe, les Invalides, la tour Montparnasse, mais le cœur n'y était pas.
La population parisienne avait l'air méfiante.
Il descendit par l'ascenseur, salua le gardien qui lui rendit un timide salut un peu crispé et longeant les quais, se dirigea résolument vers le bois de Vincennes.
Totor n'avait pas voulu effrayer Paulette, avant son départ, en lui dévoilant la vraie raison de son voyage à Paris.
Totor n'avait qu'un but, délivrer ses potes, ses copains, ses frères, de ce lieu infâme et inhumain, que les dits humains appelaient un zoo.
Et à Vincennes, il y avait un zoo.
Il y avait même du monde là dedans.
Les cages étaient petites, les barreaux étaient gros, d'énormes fossés plein d'eau entouraient quelques minuscules ilots habités, l'un par de grands ours très tristes, l'autre par quelques uns de ses frères avachis, résignés, sans le moindre ressort.
Totor, les larmes aux yeux, décolla d'un petit coup de patte une boulette de papier collée derrière l'oreille qu'il avait prélevé dans le veston d'un piégeur de fauves quelques semaines plus tôt.
Ce piégeur de fauves avait été envoyé dans la savane par le directeur du zoo.
Mission: ramener à Paris le plus de lions possible, afin d'amuser les enfants.
La vie du piégeur s'était arrêtée à l'instant précis où faisant le compte mental des lionceaux capturés dans la journée, il écoutait dans son bivouac un disque de Georgette Matthieu.
Paulette et Totor n'avaient pas aimé cette viande de piégeur sèche, nerveuse et dure comme son cœur.
Sur la boulette de papier, Totor, à travers ses larmes, déchiffra cette adresse: Simon Lebourreau, 351 avenue Henri Martin, Paris 16ème
Monsieur et madame Lebourreau s'apprêtaient à partir à l'opéra.
Madame le bourreau avait revêtu pour l'occasion cette splendide peau de léopard dont son mari lui avait fait cadeau pour Noël.
Le sang de Totor ne fit qu'un tour, peut-être deux, mais pas plus.
D'un bon prodigieux, il se projeta sur les épaules du couple Lebourreau, les renversa et les tira dans sa gueule géante jusqu'à l'intérieur, dans le grand salon bourré de trophées de chasse.
Que nous arrive-t-il?
Firent en tremblant les époux Lebourreau.
Vous êtes tombés dans la gueule du lion leur dit le lion.
Mais que voulez-vous, Monsieur...
Totor, je m'appelle, je veux votre peau, pour m'en faire une descente de lit.
Ah!

Je l'offrirai à Paulette en arrivant
Je vous en supplie dit monsieur Lebourreau Nous avons des enfants, prenez plutôt nos enfants
N'ayez crainte, je m'en occuperai aussi

Vous allez téléphoner au ministère de l'
Intérieur et demander le ministre.
Premièrement: qu'il redonne la liberté à tous mes amis en prison chez vous.
Deuxièmement: qu'il frète un grand bateau qui nous ramènera tous jusqu'en Afrique.
Et troisièmement la promesse écrite que vous ne capturerez jamais plus de bêtes sauvages pour amuser des gens idiots.
Vous êtes fou ne put s'empêcher de lâcher monsieur Lebourreau
Une insulte de plus et je vous avale à la croque-sel dit Totor Alors vous avez une minute pour réfléchir
C'est bon dit Lebourreau résigné et il appela le ministre.
Les éléphants ne purent entrer qu'un par un dans les wagons spécialement construits pour les amener jusqu'au bateau.
Tout le long du chemin, les girafes dont le cou dépassait de deux mètres au dessus du toit, par un trou spécialement aménagé, regardaient les grises HLM, en plaignant ces pauvres bêtes fixes.
Les babouins, les hyènes, les tigres, les panthères, les rhinocéros étaient fous de joie sur la route de la liberté.
Les ours, eux, étaient partis gare du Nord, rapatriés vers les grands froids, comme l'avait promis le ministre.
Monsieur et madame Lebourreau, tenus en laisse courte par Totor étaient mal à l'aise dans leur peau d'otages.
En arrivant dans la savane dit Totor aux époux Lebourreau Nous ferons, tous mes amis et moi, une grande fête de la liberté.
Nous vous ferons sauter dans des cerceaux enflammés pour amuser nos lionceaux, et si vous êtes bien sages, nous vous relâcherons, sans eau, sans gaz et sans électricité.
C'est à ce moment-là, que Simon Lebourreau s'éveilla en sursaut dans son lit.
Il était en nage et tremblait de tous ses membres.
Sa femme lui dit Qu'as-tu mon ami?
Je crois dit Lebourreau qu'à partir d'aujourd'hui, je ne serai plus directeur de zoo, j'ai encore fait le même cauchemar habituel.
Toute la nuit, j'ai rêvé d'un abominable lion violet aux yeux rooooses

He was violet with pink eyes.
Which, even in Paris, is especially noticeable when you forget to wear your sunglasses and your mountain pass and, moreover, when you take the elevator to visit the Eiffel Tower.
Violet, completely violet with pink eyes, we can say it's not very common.
Maybe some dragonflies from Bengal, and even then.
Squirrels from the Camargue, perhaps.
Maybe, I say, and again, I'm not sure.
But violet, truly violet with pink... baby bottom pink eyes, I repeat, it's not ordinary, especially for a lion.
So, Totor had been in Paris for just a few hours, and he had already found a way to get noticed.
He had said to Paulette: my lioness, I'm taking a quick trip to Paris, I'll see the Eiffel Tower, Léon Zitrone, and the slaughterhouses of La Villette, you see, I won't be long.
Prepare me a gazelle cassoulet, chill two or three of those explorers who come to do photo safaris, and keep the cushions from their jeep, they can always be useful for a nap.

Totor had not wanted to frighten Paulette, before his departure, by revealing the real reason for his trip to Paris.
Totor had only one goal: to free his buddies, his friends, his brothers, from this infamous and inhumane place that humans called a zoo.
And in Vincennes, there was a zoo.
There were even people in there.
The cages were small, the bars were thick, huge ditches full of water surrounded some tiny inhabited islets, one by large, very sad bears, the other by some of his brothers, slumped, resigned, without the slightest spring in their step.
Totor, tears in his eyes, peeled off with a little flick of his paw a ball of paper stuck behind his ear that he had taken from the jacket of a wild animal trapper a few weeks earlier.
This wild animal trapper had been sent to the savannah by the director of the zoo.
Mission: bring back to Paris as many lions as possible, in order to amuse the children.
The life of the trapper had stopped at the precise moment when, making a mental count of the lion cubs captured during the day, he was listening to a Georgette Matthieu record in his bivouac.
Paulette and Totor had not liked this trapper's meat, dry, sinewy, and hard as his heart.
On the ball of paper, Totor, through his tears, deciphered this address: Simon Lebourreau, 351 avenue Henri Martin, Paris 16th.
Mr. and Mrs. Lebourreau were getting ready to go to the opera.
Mrs. Lebourreau had donned for the occasion this splendid leopard skin that her husband had given her for Christmas.
Totor's blood ran cold, maybe twice, but no more.
With a prodigious leap, he landed on the shoulders of the Lebourreau couple, knocked them over, and pulled them into his giant mouth, into the large living room crammed with hunting trophies.
"What's happening to us?"
The Lebourreau couple trembled.
"You have fallen into the lion's den," the lion told them.
"But what do you want, Mr..."
"Totor, my name is Totor. I want your skin, to make a bedside rug out of it."
"Ah!"
"Ah!"
"Ah!"
"I'll give it to Paulette when I get there."
"Please," said Mr. Lebourreau, "We have children, take our children instead."
"Don't worry, I'll take care of them too."
"But what exactly do you want?"
Lebourreau asked.
"You're going to call the Ministry of the
Interior and ask for the minister.
Firstly: that he releases all my friends imprisoned in your home.
Secondly: that he charters a large boat to take us all back to Africa.
And thirdly, a written promise that you will never again capture wild animals to amuse stupid people."
"You're crazy," Mr. Lebourreau couldn't help but blurt out.
"One more insult and I'll swallow you whole," said Totor, "So you have one minute to think."
"Alright," said Lebourreau resignedly, and he called the minister.
The elephants could only enter one by one into the wagons specially built to take them to the boat.
All along the way, the giraffes, whose necks stuck out two meters above the roof, through a specially designed hole, looked at the gray HLMs, pitying these poor immobile creatures.
The baboons, the hyenas, the tigers, the panthers, the rhinoceroses were overjoyed on the road to freedom.
The bears, on the other hand, had left from Gare du Nord, repatriated to the great cold, as the minister had promised.
Mr. and Mrs. Lebourreau, kept on a short leash by Totor, were uncomfortable in their hostage skins.
"When we arrive in the savannah," Totor said to the Lebourreau couple, "All my friends and I will have a big freedom party.
We'll make you jump through flaming hoops to amuse our cubs, and if you're good, we'll release you, without water, without gas, and without electricity."
It was at that moment that Simon Lebourreau woke up with a start in his bed.
He was sweating and trembling all over.
His wife said to him, "What's wrong, my dear?"
"I think," said Lebourreau, "That from today, I will no longer be the director of the zoo. I just had the same usual nightmare again.
All night, I dreamt of a horrible violet lion with piiiink eyes."
