Disse il soldato al suo re,
Nuovo mondo tu avrai

L′Indio il coltello puntò sulle stelle a ponente
E le navi contò

Dentro la città dai muri d′ oro
Ai soldati il fiato si fermò
Sopra l'innocenza del giaguaro
L'aquila cristiana si gettò.
L ′ indio il coltello puntò contro il sole
Tu farmi del male non puoi.
Abbassò le braccia ai fianchi e disse: fermati
Mille volte puoi colpirmi e non cadrei
Una strana meraviglia prese gli uomini
Il bandito di Castiglia chiese a lui:
Tu paura non hai
Ti fai gioco di noi
Il tuo trucco qual′ è?
Notte di fortezza e fiamme d'oro
Disse l′inca: uccidimi e vedrai,
Vedrai con quei tuoi occhi di sparviero
Il sole aprire ancora gli occhi miei.
L'alba tra un po′ spezzerà le tue armi
Tu farmi del male non puoi!
Ma quel sogno fu silenzio e cadde fragile
Ed il cuore di smeraldo si fermò,
Poi le spalle della notte s'incendiarono
E quel sole il re del sole non svegliò.
Le navi il soldato riempì, e con l′ oro partì
Col permesso di Dio.

The soldier said to his king,
A new world you shall have
Give me time and you will see.
The Indian pointed his knife at the setting stars
And counted the ships
Then he said: beyond the sea there is nothing
And he who comes from nothing is not an enemy.
Within the city of golden walls
The soldiers' breath stopped
Above the innocence of the jaguar
The Christian eagle swooped down.
The Indian pointed his knife at the sun
You cannot hurt me.
He lowered his arms to his sides and said: stop
You can strike me a thousand times and I would not fall
A strange wonder seized the men
The bandit of Castile asked him:
You have no fear
You're making a fool of us
What's your trick?
Night of fortress and golden flames
Said the Inca: kill me and you will see,
You will see with those hawk eyes of yours
The sun still open my eyes.
The dawn will soon break your weapons
You cannot hurt me!
But that dream was silence and fell fragile
And the heart of emerald stopped,
Then the shoulders of the night caught fire
And that sun did not wake the sun king.
The soldier filled the ships, and with gold departed
With God's permission.
