Hebe die Beine, spute dich schnell"

Die Kerzen fangen zu brennen an
Das Himmelstor ist aufgetan
Alte und Junge sollen nun
Von der Jagd des Lebens einmal ruh'n
Und morgen flieg ich hinab zu Erden
Es soll wieder Weihnachten werden

Kommet ihr Hirten, ihr Männer und Frau'n
Kommet das liebliche Kindlein zu schau'n

Ich sprach: "Lieber Herr Christ
Meine Reise fast zu Ende ist
Ich soll nur noch in diese Stadt
Die eitel gute Kinder hat"

"Hast du das Säcklein auch bei dir?"
Ich sprach: "Das Säcklein, das ist hier
Denn Apfel, Nuss und Mandelkern
Essen fromme Kinder gern"

"Hast du die Rute auch bei dir?"
Ich sprach: "Die Rute, die ist hier
Doch für die Kinder nur, die schlechten
Die trifft es auf den Teil, den rechten"

Kindlein sprach: "So ist es recht
So geh mit Gott, mein teurer Knecht

From out of the forest, I come here
I must tell you, that Christmas is near
Everywhere on the tips of the fir trees
I saw golden candles sitting
And high up from the heavenly gate
The Christ child peeped with wide eyes

And as I thus stroll through the dark fir tree
Then it called to me with a clear voice
"Knecht Ruprecht", it called, "Old fellow
Lift your legs, hurry up quickly"

The candles begin to light
The gate of heaven is open
Old and young shall now
From the hunt of life once rest
And tomorrow I will fly down to earth
It will be Christmas again

Come, ye shepherds, ye men, and women
Come to see the lovely child

I said: "Dear Mr. Christ
My journey is almost over
I only have to go to this city
Which has nothing but good children"

"Do you also have the bag with you?"
I said: "The bag, it is here
For apples, nuts and almonds
Good children like to eat them"

"Do you also have the rod with you?"
I said: "The rod, it is here
But only for the children who are bad
It hits them on the right part"

The child said: "It is right
So go with God, my dear servant
