Ganz hinten links im Klassenzimmer
Steht jahrelang schon ein Klavier,
Hat keinen Spieler, keinen Stimmer,
Ist nur zum Abtransport zu schwer.

Mein Platz ist in der selben Ecke.
Nicht alle Kinder werden gleich geliebt.
Ich weiß, es wartet unter seiner Decke,
Dass meine Hand sich drunter schiebt.

Die Schule ist aus.
Sie rennen nach Haus,
Doch ich bleib hier
Bei meinem zahnlosen Klavier.

Ich fange an,
Was meine Hand noch nicht verstehen kann.
Die Finger tun sich schwer,
Doch langsam fühl ich immer mehr,
Musik wird mir mein ganzes Leben
Die treueste Gefährtin sein
Und meiner Seele endlich eine Heimat geben,
Viel mehr als Griechisch und Latein.

Der Schulwart drängt mich schon zu gehen,
Sperrt hinter mir die Klasse zu,
Schüttelt den Kopf, kann nicht verstehen,
Was ich mit dem Gerümpel tu.
Sollte die Zeit zum Lernen nützen,
Seit Stunden schon zu Hause sein.
Am Jahresende bleib ich wieder sitzen
Und zwar in Griechisch und Latein.
Denn wer nicht lernt, was jeder lernen muss,
Der lernt doch wenigstens den Blues.

I've been standing at the back left corner of the classroom
For years, a piano gathers dust,
With no one to play it, no one to tune it,
Too heavy to move, it's just collecting rust.

In that same corner, there's where I sit.
Not all kids are loved the same way.
I know what's waiting under its lid,
Just waiting for my hands to come its way.

School is out.
They all run for the door,
But I stay here
With my toothless grand piano.

I start to play,
My hands are fumbling, I'm still learning.
My fingers struggle, but the music calls,
I feel it deep within me, my spirit soars.
Music will be my life's companion,
A faithful friend, my guiding light.
It gives my soul a home, a place to land,
Far more true than Greek or Latin.

The janitor, he's urging me to go,
He locks the classroom door.
He shakes his head, he doesn't know,
What I see in that old wreck.
I should be studying, wasting my time,
I should have been home hours ago.
At the end of the year, I'll fail again,
In Greek and Latin, I don't fit in.
For those who can't do what they must,
They learn the blues, it's a different kind of trust.
