Scharf und stechend kam der Schmerz, ich fing an, wie am Spieß zu schrei'n
Um mich wurde alles rot und ich blutete wie ein Schwein
Und dann kamst du keuchend wieder und sahst mich und all das Blut:
"Hey, Doktor Berenthal kommt und alles ist gut!"

Ich seh noch heute, wie die große vertraute Gestalt am Bunkereingang steht
Wie sie vor mir auf der Treppe kniet und meine Stirn mit sieben Stichen näht
Ich weiß noch, wie das Jod in meiner Wunde brannte und ich weiß noch, wie es roch
Und wenn ich's je vergessen sollte, dann erinnert mich die Narbe heute noch
Wie der Schmerz allmählich nachließ und mich weniger bedrückte
Als das Donnerwetter zuhaus, das in den Vordergrund rückte
Und er half mir aufzustehen und er nahm mich bei der Hand
Brachte mich zu meinen Eltern mit dem schaurigen Verband

Mit wehendem Rock, dem braunen Doktorkoffer und sein Stethoskop hing tief
Und er schwang sich auf die alte klapprige 250er NSU
Und stob wie der schwarze Ritter durch den Ort und seinen Schutzbefohl'nen zu
Und bald hörtest Du sein Ross, sich knatternd vor dem Haus aufbäumen
Und dann trat er an dein Krankenbett in deinen Fieberträumen
Er kam als du Scharlach hattest, Masern, Mumps und das und dies
Und er brachte auf die Welt, und er brachte ins Paradies
Und er brachte Trost und Wärme mit, Kampfgeist und Lebensmut

Weißt du noch wie sich das anfühlt, das eiskalte Stetoskop auf Gänsehaut
Und das Abklopfen im Rücken, ist dir die Zeremonie nicht noch vertraut?
Dies Trommeln mit gekreuzten Fingern, dessen Sinn du niemals ganz begriffen hast
Dieser Holzspatel im Mund, diesmal wirst du dich übergeben - oder fast
Du kennst alle seine Späße und diese Ablenkungswitze
Und weißt, hinter seinem Rücken hält er diese Riesenspritze
Plötzlich scheint dir seine Anwesenheit überflüssig und
Tut dir schon gar nichts mehr weh, bis du schon wieder ganz gesund
Alle Schmerzen sind verflogen, Jammern wird zu Übermut

Und da liegt der riesengroße Kerl verlassen und verraten
Zwischen Schläuchen, Monitoren an Schnüren und Apparaten

Und du wünschtest sehr, der alte Zauberspruch wirkte noch mal:
"Halt durch Alter, ich hol dir den Schwarzen Ritter, ruhig Blut!
Doktor Berenthal kommt und alles ist gut!"

Das Emailleschild an seinem Haus gibt es nicht mehr
Die kleine, abgewohnte Praxis steht noch immer leer
Und wo kriegst du jetzt deinen Trost und deine Zuversicht her?
Wenn das Erwachsen werden heißt, verdammt, dann ist es schwer -
Doktor Berenthal kommt nicht mehr

I still remember how the iodine burned in my wound and I still remember how it smelled
And if I ever forget it, then the scar still reminds me today
How the pain gradually subsided and bothered me less
Than the thunderstorm at home, which came to the fore
And he helped me to get up and he took me by the hand
Brought me to my parents with the gruesome bandage
Calmed their horror and he dampened their anger
