Vom Haustor zur Kneipe, genau zwanzig Schritte
Von der Kneipe zur Kirche, zur Bank in der Mitte

Ein Glas im Stehen und noch eins als Ersatz
Für das vor der Messe, auf einen Schluck aus
Von der Kneipe genau zwanzig Schritte nach Haus

Der Pflasterstein nach dem elften Schritt links
Der hebt sich hervor wie ein Prophet
Und gläubiges Moos umwächst ihn rings
Und wartet darauf, daß die Zeit vergeht
Und die Balken im Fachwerk, die biegen sich schräg
Aus Langeweile und Überdruß
Der Brunnen fließt widerwillig und träg
Und der Neptun darin wird zum Tantalus

Vom Herd zum Tisch, zum Buffet in der Ecke
Vom Schrank zum Tisch auf ein Tuch ohne Flecke
Bei Tisch ein paar Worte von dem, der nie wusste
Warum er nicht wollte und warum er musste
Vom Tisch zum Likörschrank, vorsichtig und leise
Und wieder zurück als einzige Reise

Und dann füllen sie sich mit saurem Kaffee
All die Sammeltassen mit goldenem Rand
Dann ersticken Plüschkissen im Kanapee
Und es zögert die Jahresuhr an der Wand
Dann räkeln sich die Porzellanfigurinen
Und trocknes Gebäck zerkrümelt auf Tellern
Troll'n Tassen und Gläser sich in die Vitrinen
Und der Wein altert weiter in muffigen Kellern

Vom Sessel zum Fenster, die Nacht bricht herein
Ein Besoffner fällt über den Pflasterstein
Beim elften Schritt links, dann ist's ruhig, wies war
Wie gestern, wie morgen, wie voriges Jahr
Vom Fenster zur Turmuhr, ein Blick, es ist spät –
Vom Fenster zum Sessel, vom Sessel zum Bett

A Day

From the front door to the pub, exactly twenty steps
From the pub to the church, to the bank in the middle
From the church, to the pub, across the square
A glass while standing and another for a spare
For the one before mass, to drink it down fast
From the pub exactly twenty steps home

The paving stone after the eleventh step on the left
Stands out like a prophet
And faithful moss surrounds it all around
And waits for time to pass
And the beams in the timber frame, they bend diagonally
Out of boredom and weariness
The fountain flows reluctantly and sluggishly
And the Neptune in it becomes Tantalus

From the stove to the table, to the buffet in the corner
From the cupboard to the table on a cloth without stains
At the table, a few words from the one who never knew
Why he didn't want to and why he had to
From the table to the liquor cabinet, carefully and quietly
And back again as the only journey

And then they fill themselves with sour coffee
All the collectible cups with golden rims
Then plush cushions suffocate on the sofa
And the grandfather clock on the wall hesitates
Then the porcelain figurines lounge
And dry pastries crumble on plates
Cups and glasses troll into the display cases
And the wine ages further in musty cellars

From the armchair to the window, night falls
A drunkard falls over the paving stone
On the eleventh step on the left, then it's quiet, as it was
Like yesterday, like tomorrow, like last year
From the window to the clock tower, a glance, it's late –
From the window to the armchair, from the armchair to the bed
