בבית ליד המסילה,
לא מתהלכים עוד ברגליים יחפות.
וליד המרפסת הגדולה,
לא מבעירים עוד את עלי הצפצפות.

השער סגור, הדלתות נעולות,
התריסים מוגפים גם ביום.
הרקיע פרוש ועיניו עוד כחולות,
אך הבית חדל כבר לנשום.

פעם בבית ליד המסילה,
ראיתי פנים מאירות.
כי הבית הריק, ליד המסילה,
ידע גם שעות אחרות.

בבית ליד המסילה,
לא מבקשים עוד ספל מים בלילות.
ולמרות שהשמש עגולה,
לא מגדלים עוד בחצר חמניות.

הבוקר אילם והאור לא עולה,
ויונים לא עפות אל הגג.
חום השמש צורב, והגשם הולם,
אך הבית שותק כמו דג.

פעם בבית ליד המסילה,
ראיתי פנים מאירות.
כי הבית הריק ליד המסילה,
ידע גם שעות אחרות.

בבית ליד המסילה,
לא מברכים עוד על נרות לכבוד שבת.
וליד המרפסת הגדולה,
לא נטעים עוד אילנות בט"ו בשבט.

הבית דומם ודומעים חלוניו,
התמונות נצמדות אל הקיר,
ודומע האיש הרואה בעיניו,
וביתו לא יכול להכיר.

Beside the Tracks

In the house beside the tracks,
Bare feet no longer walk.
And by the large porch,
Aspen leaves no longer burn.

The gate is closed, the doors are locked,
The blinds are drawn even during the day.
The sky is open and its eyes are still blue,
But the house has stopped breathing.

Once, in the house beside the tracks,
I saw bright faces.
For the empty house, beside the tracks,
Knew other hours, too.

In the house beside the tracks,
They no longer ask for a cup of water at night.
And though the sun is round,
Sunflowers are no longer grown in the yard.

The morning is silent and the light does not rise,
And doves do not fly to the roof.
The sun's heat burns, and the rain beats down,
But the house is silent as a fish.

Once, in the house beside the tracks,
I saw bright faces.
For the empty house beside the tracks,
Knew other hours, too.

In the house beside the tracks,
They no longer light candles for Shabbat.
And by the large porch,
They no longer plant trees on Tu B'Shevat.

The house is still and its windows weep,
The pictures cling to the wall,
And the man who sees it with his eyes weeps,
And his house cannot recognize him.
