I started listening to bluegrass music in Bryan Duckworth's rust red 1970 Ford Maverick.
Had an eight track tape deck and an eight track tape of Bill Monroe's Greatest Hits.
We used to skip second period chemistry and go over to the Shamrock station across the street from the high school and get a case of Texas Pride beer.
Charge it on my dad′s credit card and get ′em to write it up as oil so dad never knew the difference.
Then we'd ride around and drink Texas Pride, listen to Bill Monroe.
Soon we got to be bluegrass experts.
And we′d stop in another Shamrock station and get another Texas Pride case,
Drink that and listen to the Stanley Brothers and then we'd go get a tape of Jim and Jesse and it was on to the Kentucky Colonels and Mack Wiseman and the New Grass Revival, Peter Rowan, and finally I got the brilliant idea one day to take all the greatest bluegrass song titles in the world and string ′em together to make this song right here,
The Bluegrass Widow. Quite possibly the worst bluegrass song ever written.

I did this in tribute to the Front Porch Boys, which was a bluegrass band I was in in College Station, Texas.
We were a little four piece band, we played weddings and parties and out on the porch and beer joints and one weekend on a handful of cheap amphetamines, we decided to go to Crockett, Texas.
We entered the International Bluegrass Band Competition and took second place.
We could play faster than anybody in the competition.
The other two bands took first and third, respectively.
I met some friends and went off into the night separated from the Front Porch Boys and met back up with them in the cold, gray light of dawn, as the bluegrass songs say.
They were standing underneath a giant pine tree there in Crockett singing the rudest, most grotesque, nastiest bluegrass songs you've ever heard in your life.
I′m talking about the kind of song where not only is the character in the song dead by the end of the song, but he's been dismembered as well.
And the Front Porch Boys stopped and looked up at me just long enough to say, "We're taking bluegrass music where it′s never been before.
And we′re not taking you with us 'cuz you don′t have that high and lonesome sound that bluegrass music requires."? Well, I'm not one to fight failure.
I packed up my stuff and left.
The Front Porch Boys broke up three days later when they realized I owned the PA system.

"Will you miss me when I′m gone"? were his final words to her
"Darlin' think of what you′ve done,"? then replied his Knoxville girl
And the leaves had started turning when his mind began to fail
Then he broke down in a breakdown, now she wears a long black veil.

J'ai commencé à écouter de la musique bluegrass dans la Ford Maverick 1970 rouge rouille de Bryan Duckworth.
Il avait un lecteur de cassettes huit pistes et une cassette huit pistes des plus grands succès de Bill Monroe.
On séchait le cours de chimie de deuxième période et on allait à la station-service Shamrock en face du lycée pour acheter une caisse de bière Texas Pride.
Je la faisais payer sur la carte de crédit de mon père et je leur faisais écrire "essence" pour que mon père ne voie jamais la différence.
Ensuite, on roulait en écoutant Bill Monroe et en buvant de la Texas Pride.
On est vite devenus des experts en bluegrass.
On s'arrêtait dans une autre station-service Shamrock et on prenait une autre caisse de Texas Pride,
On la buvait en écoutant les Stanley Brothers, puis on allait chercher une cassette de Jim et Jesse et on passait aux Kentucky Colonels et à Mack Wiseman et au New Grass Revival, Peter Rowan, et finalement j'ai eu la brillante idée un jour de prendre tous les titres des plus grandes chansons de bluegrass du monde et de les assembler pour faire cette chanson,
La Veuve Bluegrass. Probablement la pire chanson de bluegrass jamais écrite.

J'ai fait ça en hommage aux Front Porch Boys, un groupe de bluegrass dont je faisais partie à College Station, au Texas.
On était un petit groupe de quatre, on jouait dans des mariages, des fêtes, sur des porches, dans des bars, et un week-end, sous l'emprise d'une poignée d'amphétamines bon marché, on a décidé d'aller à Crockett, au Texas.
On s'est inscrit au Concours international de groupes de bluegrass et on a terminé deuxièmes.
On pouvait jouer plus vite que tous les autres groupes du concours.
Les deux autres groupes ont terminé premier et troisième, respectivement.
J'ai rencontré des amis et je suis parti dans la nuit, séparé des Front Porch Boys, et je les ai retrouvés à la lueur froide et grise de l'aube, comme disent les chansons de bluegrass.
Ils étaient debout sous un pin géant à Crockett en train de chanter les chansons de bluegrass les plus grossières, les plus grotesques et les plus méchantes que vous ayez jamais entendues.
Je parle du genre de chanson où non seulement le personnage de la chanson est mort à la fin, mais il a aussi été démembré.
Les Front Porch Boys se sont arrêtés et m'ont regardé juste assez longtemps pour me dire : "On emmène la musique bluegrass là où elle n'a jamais été auparavant.
Et on ne t'emmène pas avec nous parce que tu n'as pas ce son aigu et mélancolique que la musique bluegrass exige." Eh bien, je ne suis pas du genre à lutter contre l'échec.
J'ai fait mes bagages et je suis parti.
Les Front Porch Boys se sont séparés trois jours plus tard quand ils ont réalisé que c'était moi qui avais le système de sonorisation.

"Te manquerai-je quand je serai parti ?" furent ses derniers mots pour elle
"Chérie, pense à ce que tu as fait", répondit alors sa fille de Knoxville
Les feuilles avaient commencé à tourner quand son esprit a commencé à flancher
Puis il s'est effondré, et maintenant elle porte un long voile noir.
