A Lone Striker

The swinging mill bell changed its rate
To tolling like the count of fate,
And though at that the tardy ran,
One failed to make the closing gate.
There was a law of God or man
That on the one who came too late
The gate for half an hour be locked,
His time be lost, his pittance docked.
He stood rebuked and unemployed.
The straining mill began to shake.
The mill, though many-many-eyed,
Had eyes inscrutably opaque;
So that he couldn't look inside
To see if some forlorn machine
Was standing idle for his sake.
(He couldn't hope its heart would break.)
And yet he thought he saw the scene:
The air was full of dust of wool.
A thousand yarns were under pull,
But pull so slow, with such a twist,
All day from spool to lesser spool,
It seldom overtaxed their strength;
They safely grew in slender length.
And if one broke by any chance,
The spinner saw it at a glance.
The spinner still was there to spin.
That's where the human still came in.
Her deft hand showed with finger rings
Among the harplike spread of strings.
She caught the pieces end to end
And, with a touch that never missed,
Not so much tied as made them blend.
Man's ingenuity was good.
He saw it plainly where he stood,
Yet found it easy to resist.
He knew another place, a wood,
And in it, tall as trees, were cliffs;
And if he stood on one of these,
'Twould be among the tops of trees,
Their upper branches round him wreathing,
Their breathing mingled with his breathing.
If---if he stood! Enough of ifs!
He knew a path that wanted walking;
He knew a spring that wanted drinking;
A thought that wanted further thinking;
A love that wanted re-renewing.
Nor was this just a way of talking
To save him the expense of doing.
With him it boded action, deed.
The factory was very fine;
He wished it all the modern speed.
Yet, after all, 'twas not divine,
That is to say, 'twas not a church.
He never would assume that he'd
Be any institution's need.
But he said then and still would say,
If there should ever come a day
When industry seemed like to die
Because he left it in the lurch,
Or even merely seemed to pine
For want of his approval, why,
Come get him---they knew where to search.

Un Grève Solitaire

La cloche de l'usine, qui se balançait, a changé son rythme
Pour sonner comme le compte du destin,

Il se tenait réprimandé et sans emploi.
L'usine, qui forçait, a commencé à trembler.
L'usine, bien que dotée de nombreux yeux,
Avait des yeux impénétrablement opaques ;
Si bien qu'il ne pouvait pas regarder à l'intérieur
Pour voir si une machine désespérée
Restant inactive pour son bien.
(Il ne pouvait pas espérer que son cœur se brise.)
Et pourtant, il pensait voir la scène :
L'air était plein de poussière de laine.
Un millier de fils étaient tirés,
Mais tirés si lentement, avec une telle torsion,
Toute la journée, de la bobine à la bobine plus petite,
Cela n'a jamais trop sollicité leur force ;
Ils ont grandi en toute sécurité en longueur mince.
Et si l'un se cassait par hasard,
La fileuse le voyait en un instant.
La fileuse était toujours là pour filer.
C'est là que l'humain est toujours intervenu.
Sa main habile se montrait avec des anneaux de doigts
Parmi l'étendue de cordes comme une harpe.
Elle a attrapé les morceaux d'un bout à l'autre
Et, avec un toucher qui n'a jamais manqué,
Pas tant lié qu'elle les a fait se fondre.
L'ingéniosité de l'homme était bonne.
Il le voyait clairement là où il se tenait,
Pourtant, il trouvait facile de résister.
Il connaissait un autre endroit, un bois,
Et dedans, aussi haut que les arbres, il y avait des falaises ;
Et s'il se tenait sur l'une d'elles,
Ce serait parmi les cimes des arbres,
Leurs branches supérieures l'entouraient,
Leur respiration mêlée à la sienne.
Si---s'il se tenait ! Assez de si !
Il connaissait un chemin qui voulait être parcouru ;
Il connaissait une source qui voulait être bue ;
Une pensée qui voulait être approfondie ;
Un amour qui voulait être renouvelé.
Ce n'était pas seulement une façon de parler
Pour lui éviter la dépense de faire.
Avec lui, cela augure de l'action, de l'acte.
L'usine était très belle ;
Il lui souhaitait toute la vitesse moderne.
Pourtant, après tout, ce n'était pas divin,
C'est-à-dire, ce n'était pas une église.
Il n'assumerait jamais qu'il serait
Le besoin de toute institution.
Mais il a dit alors et dirait toujours,
S'il devait jamais arriver un jour
Où l'industrie semblait mourir
Parce qu'il l'a laissée tomber,
Ou même simplement semblait s'attrister
Par manque de son approbation, pourquoi,
Venez le chercher---ils savaient où chercher.
