A handsome young bagpiper,
Who had never been to Naples before,
How he cried, in front of the haystack,
When he left his beloved outside...
And at midnight, on a train,
He left Avellino for Naples...

Good and sincere...
Arriving in Naples from the village,
He walked around like a stunned man...
And it happened that, one fine evening,
He went to play at the house of a lady:
Carpets, lights, a floor of waxed tiles...
Such riches he had never seen before!
But what captivated him, more than these riches,
Were the lady's eyes and her long hair...

That attacked him with a new passion!...
And he forgot about his love for Filomena
Who was a hard worker and very good...

He could not find that lady at home...

A small house in the mountains,
A fireplace with a block of pine wood...
