Da wurd' es um mich immer stiller

Und sah von den andern gar nichts mehr

I wanted to dress up, my dear,
And act like a fool, no fear.
I searched for suitable things,
To make you laugh, my heart sings.
I opened boxes and chests,
And rummaged through rags and the rest.
I plundered our wardrobe with glee,
And laughed myself silly, you see.
Then I went out into the town,
And everything looked upside down.

I dressed up as a sailor bold,
But that completely fell cold.
Then I went as a nurse so kind,
But only silly laughter I'd find.
As a doctor with coat and injection,
I heard only dirty reflection.
So I went as a fireman so grand,
And they asked if I'd lost my hand.

As a vampire with bloody fangs,
I only saw the others yawn, by jove, my sweet.
As a cowboy with gun and holster,
The others yawned even more, bolster.
As a pirate with an eye patch so sly,
I experienced another flop, oh my.
So I went as Frankenstein's brother,
And they brought me a sick note, another.

But I always think of something new, for thee.

I dressed up as a gorilla so strong,
It became quieter and quieter around me, all along.
I went as the great white shark,
There was a wild shriek and a bark.
Then I went as a poisonous snake,
I didn't see the others for goodness sake.
I dressed up as a grizzly bear,
And saw nothing more of them there.
It's not easy being a fool, you see,
But I always think of something new, for thee.

I'll prove it to you all, my dear,
The young, the old, and those held near.
You will still marvel at me, I vow,
Then a murmur will go through the crowd, somehow.
Then you will shed tears, I swear,
And find me a riot, I dare.
