Der Wind blies kalt ums Bauernhaus

Und der Bauer sprach zu seiner Frau:
"Steh' auf und schliess die Tür!"
"Lieber John", sprach sie, "du weisst genau,
Wie ich meine Konchen spür',
Denn ich schufte hier den ganzen Tag,
Darum schliess doch selbst die Tür."
"Ich scher' das Schaf, ich melk' die Kuh,"
Sprach der Bauer da zu ihr,
"Und ich bin der Herr auf diesem Hof,
Drum steh' auf und schliess die Tür."
So sassen sie und dachten dich:
"Wart's ab, ich zeig' es dir",
Und der Wind blies kalt ums Bauernhaus
In das Zimmer durch die Tür.
Dann beschlossen sie: "Wir schweigen jetzt
In diesem Zimmer hier.
Aber wer das erste Wort verliert,
Der steht auf und schliesst die Tür."
Drei Räuber strichen um das Haus,
Dachten sich: "Hier bleiben wir",
Denn das Licht schien in die Dunkelheit
Durch den Spalt der off'nen Tür.
Sie stürmten in das Bauernhaus,
Riefen: "Her mit Wein und Bier!"
Doch der Bauer und die Bäuerin
Blickten wortlos auf die Tür.

Ein Räuber schrie: "Wir machen jetzt
Aus allem Kleinholz hier."
Aber Jane und John, die blickten stur
Durch das Zimmer auf die Tür.
"Kommt, wir ziehn an seinem grauen Bart,
Soll er brüllen wie ein Stier!"
Rief der zweite Räuber,
Aber John schaute still und stumm zur Tür.
"Also küss ich seine junge Frau,
So ein Weib, das wünscht ich mir",
Rief der Räuberhauptmann,
Aber Jane sah nur schweigend auf die Tür.
Da schrie der Bauer rot vor Zorn:
"Genug, jetzt reicht es mir!
Meine Bauernfaust sollt Ihr nun spür'n
Und ich werf' Euch raus zur Tür!"
"Na endlich" sprach die Bauersfrau,
"Lieber John, ich danke dir.
Nun hast du das erste Wort gesagt,
Drum steh auf und schliess die Tür."

Jane and John

The wind blew cold around the farmhouse
Of Jane and John McLear,
And the farmer said to his wife:
"Get up and close the door!"
"Dear John," said she, "you know very well,
How I feel my bones,
For I toil here all day long,
Therefore close the door yourself."
"I shear the sheep, I milk the cow,"
Said the farmer unto her,
"And I am the master of this farm,
Therefore get up and close the door."
So they sat and thought of it:
"Just you wait, I'll show you",
And the wind blew cold around the farmhouse
In the room through the door.
Then they decided: "We'll keep quiet now
In this room here.
But whoever loses the first word,
He gets up and closes the door."
Three robbers prowled around the house,
Thought: "Here we'll stay",
For the light shone in the darkness
Through the crack of the open door.
They stormed the farmhouse,
Shouted: "Bring us wine and beer!"
But the farmer and the farmer's wife
Looked at the door without a word.

A robber cried: "Now we'll make
Out of all the firewood here."
But Jane and John, they looked stubbornly
Through the room at the door.
"Come on, we'll pull at his grey beard,
He should roar like a bull!"
Cried the second robber,
But John looked quietly and silently at the door.
"So I'll kiss his young wife,
Such a woman, I wish for myself",
Cried the captain of the robbers,
But Jane only looked at the door in silence.
Then the farmer cried red with anger:
"Enough, now it's enough for me!
You should feel my farmer's fist now
And I'll throw you out the door!"
"Well, finally," said the farmer's wife,
"Dear John, I thank you.
Now you've said the first word,
So get up and close the door."
