Gracias a mi conducta vagamente antisocial
Temo no verme nunca encaramado a un pedestal:
No alegrará mi efigie el censo de monumentos,
No vendrán las palomas a rociarme de excrementos.

Y es una pena, la verdad,
Porque sería muy bonito
Seguir de adorno en mi ciudad
Sobre un bloque de granito.

Pues qué penita y qué dolor,
No tendré estatua, no señor.

Gracias a mi postura más bien anticlerical
No será un siglo de éstos cuando entre al santoral:
No acudirán beatas a pedirme un milagrillo,
No vendrán los ladrones a vaciarme mi cepillo.

Y es una pena, la verdad,
Porque tenía cierta gana
De echarle un ojo a la deidad
Mientras me doran la peana.

Pues qué penita y qué dolor
No tendré culto no señor.

Gracias a que mi musa se las da de cerebral
Son pobres mis compases para expresión corporal:
No danzarán mis prosas las reinas de discoteca,
No vendrán los carrozas a hacer su gimnasia sueca.

Y es una pena, la verdad,
Porque sería algo inefable
Cambiar la torpe realidad
Y ser o Borges o bailable.

Pues qué penita y qué dolor
No tendré el Nobel, no señor.

Gracias a mi tozuda decisión existencial
No cabe entre mis planes dar ningún salto mortal:
No gozará las honras funerales mi alma en pena,
No vendrán los gusanos a tirar de la cadena.

Y es una pena, la verdad,
Porque sería algo divino
Ver cómo todo es vanidad,
Y yo en decúbito supino.

Due to my somewhat antisocial behavior
I'm afraid I'll never see myself atop a pedestal:
My effigy won't grace the ranks of monuments,
No pigeons will come to spray me with excrement.

And it's a shame, really,
Because it would be so nice
To remain as an ornament in my city
On a block of granite.

What a pity and what a pain,
I won't have a statue, no sir.

Due to my rather anticlerical stance
It won't be in this century that I enter the calendar of saints:
No devout women will come to ask me for a miracle,
No thieves will come to empty my collection box.

And it's a shame, really,
Because I was kind of looking forward
To taking a peek at the deity
While they were gilding my pedestal.

What a pity and what a pain
I won't have a cult, no sir.

Thanks to my muse who pretends to be intellectual
My rhythms are too poor for physical expression:
My prose won't be danced by disco queens,
No old folks will come to do their Swedish gymnastics.

And it's a shame, really,
Because it would be something ineffable
To change the clumsy reality
And become either Borges or danceable.

What a pity and what a pain
I won't get the Nobel Prize, no sir.

Due to my stubborn existential decision
There's no room in my plans for any death-defying stunts:
My tormented soul won't enjoy funeral honors,
No worms will come to pull the chain.

And it's a shame, really,
Because it would be something divine
To see how all is vanity,
And me lying on my back.
