Where I first received my lessons, nature's school.
But one thing there is missing in the picture,
Without her face it seems so incomplete.
I long to see my mother in the doorway,
As she stood there years ago, her boy to greet.

Rund um meine Indiana-Heimat wehen die Kornfelder,

Oft kehren meine Gedanken zu Kindheitsszenen zurück,
Wo ich zuerst meine Lektionen in der Schule der Natur erhielt.
Doch eines fehlt in diesem Bild,
Ohne ihr Gesicht scheint es so unvollständig.
Ich sehne mich danach, meine Mutter in der Tür zu sehen,
Wie sie vor Jahren dort stand, um ihren Jungen zu begrüßen.

Von den Feldern weht der Duft von frisch gemähtem Heu.
