The tide murmurs in the hull
The fishermen chat
At the tavern door
Smoking a strong cigarette

The old ladies sew the nets
Smelling the north wind
And feel a deathly neuralgia
Running down their spines

There's a young fisherman
Chewing on cut fingers
From the fine, sharp net
He holds the mooring line in his hand,
And bids farewell to his fisherwoman wife
Who buttons up his oilskin coat

She says, stroking his capstan with her hand,
“Never take off your wedding ring,
Always keep mourning close at hand,
I'll stay with you in your thoughts
And in the glaze of your oilskin coat.”
