Viswanadhashtakam
Viswanadhashtakam
Lord of the banks of the Ganges, with artistic locks,
With his left side adorned with Gauri,
Destroyer of Manmatha's pride, which is dear to Narayana,
Worship him, the Lord of Varanasi, Vishwanatha! ॥1॥
Beyond the reach of words, of many virtues,
Whose lotus feet are worshipped by Vagesh Vishnu and the Devas,
With his left half adorned with his consort,
Worship him, the Lord of Varanasi, Vishwanatha! ॥2॥
The first among beings, adorned with serpent and tiger-skin,
The foremost among archers, with matted hair and three eyes,
With noose, goad, and boon-giving hands, and a trident,
Worship him, the Lord of Varanasi, Vishwanatha! ॥3॥
With the moon adorning his crown,
With five arrows shining in his lotus eyes,
With a pair of earrings made by the lord of the Nagas,
Worship him, the Lord of Varanasi, Vishwanatha! ॥4॥
With five faces, the dispeller of the madness of elephants,
The vanquisher of Nagas, the foremost among archers,
The forest fire for death, sorrow, and old age,
Worship him, the Lord of Varanasi, Vishwanatha! ॥5॥
Effulgent, with and without attributes, unparalleled,
The source of bliss, undefeated, and immeasurable,
With the form of a snake, the whole and the part,
Worship him, the Lord of Varanasi, Vishwanatha! ॥6॥
Abandoning hope, avoiding criticism,
Controlling the mind, which runs after sin,
Meditating on the Lord in the lotus of the heart,
Worship him, the Lord of Varanasi, Vishwanatha! ॥7॥
Without passion, attached to his devotees,
The abode of detachment and peace, and the companion of Girija,
Sweet, patient, beautiful, and fond of poison,
Worship him, the Lord of Varanasi, Vishwanatha! ॥8॥
This hymn to Shiva, the Lord of Varanasi
Was composed by Vyasa. A person who recites it,
Will attain knowledge, wealth, happiness, and endless fame,
And after death reside in the abode of gods.
He who recites this holy Vishwanadhashtakam in the presence of Shiva,
Will attain Shiva's abode and rejoice with Shiva.
