Es ist ein Ros entsprungen
Aus einer Wurzel zart.
Wie uns die Alten sungen,
Von Jesse kam die Art
Und hat ein Blümlein bracht,

Das Röslein, das ich meine,
Davon Jesaia sagt:
Ist Maria, die reine,
Die uns das Blümlein bracht.
Aus Gottes ew'gem Rat
Hat sie ein Kind geboren
Und blieb ein reine Magd.

Das Bümelein so kleine,
Das duftet uns so süß,
Mit seinem hellen Scheine
Vertreibt's die Finsternis.
Wahr' Mensch und wahrer Gott,
Hilft uns aus allem Leide,
Rettet von Sünd' und Tod.

O Jesu, bis zum Scheiden
Aus diesem Jammertal
Laß Dein Hilf uns geleiten
Hin in den Freudensaal,
In Deines Vaters Reich,
Da wir Dich ewig loben;
O Gott, uns das verleih!

A rose has sprung up
From a tender root.
As the ancients sang to us,
From Jesse came the stock
And has brought forth a little flower,
In the midst of cold winter,
Indeed at the midnight hour.

The little rose, I mean,
Of which Isaiah says:
Is Mary, the pure,
Who brought us the little flower.
From God's eternal counsel
She has borne a child
And remained a pure virgin.

The little flower so small,
That smells so sweet to us,
With its bright light
Dispels the darkness.
True man and true God,
Helps us out of all suffering,
Saves from sin and death.

O Jesus, until our parting
From this vale of tears
Let Your help guide us
Into the hall of joy,
Into Your Father's kingdom,
Where we praise You eternally;
O God, grant us this!
