関所を通る時でさえ
相撲取なら手形は要らぬ
天下御免の男意気
張手(はりて)食らって尻餅ついて
なんのどすこい 鉄砲柱
明日の夢を こめて突く

短い浴衣 薄草履(うすぞうり)
冬の北風 両国橋で
星を見上げる裸虫(はだかむし)
負けてたまるか ザンバラ髪で
櫓太鼓(やぐらだいこ)に誓ったからにゃ
いつかは結(ゆ)うぞ 大銀杏(おおいちょう)

With mud on my back
From Eko-in to Ryogoku Bridge
Have I come here to cry, a sniveling knot?
My tears shall not fall in the ring
My old mother, my brother, my sister back home
Their bellies demand the rice I'll earn

Even passing the checkpoint
As a sumo wrestler, I need no pass
The spirit of a man with imperial pardon
Although I've been slapped and knocked down
What a strong iron pillar I am
Putting all my dreams into my charges

In a short kimono and thin sandals
The winter north wind on Ryogoku Bridge
A naked bug looking up at the stars
Defeat is out of the question, even with unkempt hair
For I have sworn an oath to the ring drums
Someday I will tie the grand ginkgo
