Twas The Night Before Christmas

Twas the night before Christmas,
When all through the house
Not a creature was stirring,
Not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung
By the chimney with care,
In hopes that St Nicholas
Soon would be there.
The children were nestled
All snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.
And mamma in her ′kerchief,
And I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains
For a long winter's nap.
When out on the lawn
There arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed
To see what was the matter.
Away to the window
I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters
And threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast
Of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day
To objects below.
When, what to my
Wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh,
And eight tinny reindeer.
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment
It must be St Nick.
More rapid than eagles
His coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted,
And called them by name!
"Now Dasher! now, Dancer!
Now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid!
On, on Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch!
To the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"
As dry leaves that before
The wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So up to the house-top
The coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys,
And St Nicholas too.
And then, in a twinkling,
I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing
Of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head,
And was turning around,
Down the chimney St Nicholas
Came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur,
From his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of Toys
He had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler,
Just opening his pack.
His eyes-how they twinkled!
His dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses,
His nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth
Was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin
Was as white as the snow.
The stump of a pipe
He held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled
His head like a wreath.
He had a broad face
And a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed,
Like a bowlful of jelly!
He was chubby and plump,
A right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!
A wink of his eye
And a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know
I had nothing to dread.
He spoke not a word,
But went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings,
Then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger
Aside of his nose,
And giving a nod,
Up the chimney he rose!
He sprang to his sleigh,
To his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew
Like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim,
′Ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all,
And to all a good-night!"

C'était la veille de Noël,
Quand dans toute la maison
Pas une créature ne bougeait,
Pas même une souris.
Les chaussettes étaient accrochées
À la cheminée avec soin,
Dans l'espoir que Saint Nicolas
Serait bientôt là.
Les enfants étaient blottis
Bien au chaud dans leurs lits,
Alors que des visions de sucreries dansaient dans leurs têtes.
Et maman dans son foulard,
Et moi dans mon bonnet,
Venions de calmer nos esprits
Pour un long sommeil d'hiver.
Quand sur la pelouse
Il y eut un tel vacarme,
Je sautai du lit
Pour voir ce qui se passait.
À la fenêtre
J'ai volé comme un éclair,
J'ai ouvert les volets
Et j'ai levé la fenêtre.
La lune sur la poitrine
De la neige fraîchement tombée
Donnait l'éclat du milieu du jour
Aux objets en dessous.
Quand, à ma
Plus grande surprise, apparurent
Un traîneau miniature,
Et huit petits rennes.
Avec un petit vieux conducteur, si vif et si rapide,
Je sus en un instant
Que ce devait être le Père Noël.
Plus rapides que des aigles
Ses coursiers arrivèrent,
Et il sifflait, et criait,
Et les appelait par leur nom !
"Allons Tornade ! allons, Danseur !
Allons, Furieux et Fringant !
Allez, Comète ! Allez, Cupidon !
Allez, Donder et Blitzen !
En haut du porche !
En haut du mur !
Maintenant, foncez ! Foncez ! Foncez !
Comme des feuilles sèches qui, avant
Que l'ouragan ne souffle,
Lorsqu'elles rencontrent un obstacle, montent au ciel.
Ainsi jusqu'au sommet de la maison
Les coursiers s'envolèrent,
Avec le traîneau rempli de jouets,
Et le Père Noël aussi.
Et puis, en un clin d'œil,
J'ai entendu sur le toit
Le cabrement et le piaffement
De chaque petit sabot.
Alors que je rentrais ma tête,
Et que je me retournais,
Par la cheminée, le Père Noël
Est descendu d'un bond.
Il était tout habillé de fourrure,
De la tête aux pieds,
Et ses vêtements étaient tout tachés de cendres et de suie.
Un paquet de jouets
Il avait jeté sur son dos,
Et il ressemblait à un colporteur,
Ouvrant son baluchon.
Ses yeux, comme ils brillaient !
Ses fossettes, comme elles étaient gaies !
Ses joues étaient comme des roses,
Son nez comme une cerise !
Sa drôle de petite bouche
Était arquée comme un arc,
Et la barbe de son menton
Était aussi blanche que la neige.
Le bout d'une pipe
Il tenait serré entre ses dents,
Et la fumée l'entourait
Sa tête comme une couronne.
Il avait un visage large
Et un petit ventre rond,
Qui tremblait quand il riait,
Comme un bol plein de gelée !
Il était potelé et dodu,
Un joyeux vieux lutin,
Et j'ai ri quand je l'ai vu, malgré moi !
Un clin d'œil
Et un hochement de tête,
M'ont vite fait comprendre
Que je n'avais rien à craindre.
Il ne dit pas un mot,
Mais se mit directement au travail,
Et remplit toutes les chaussettes,
Puis se retourna d'un coup sec.
Et posant son doigt
Sur le côté de son nez,
Et faisant un signe de tête,
Il remonta la cheminée !
Il sauta dans son traîneau,
À son attelage, il siffla,
Et ils s'envolèrent tous
Comme le duvet d'un chardon.
Mais je l'entendis s'exclamer,
Avant qu'il ne disparaisse de ma vue,
"Joyeux Noël à tous,
Et à tous une bonne nuit !"
