On n'entendait pas la musique

Personne ne jouait
Mais dans un coin un homme se taisait:
"Et de quel instrument jouez-vous monsieur
Qui vous taisez et qui ne dites rien?"
Lui demandèrent les musiciens.
"Moi je joue de l'orgue de Barbarie
Et je joue du couteau aussi"
Dit l′homme qui jusqu′ici
N'avait absolument rien dit
Et puis il s′avança le couteau à la main
Et il tua tous les musiciens
Et il joua de l'orgue de Barbarie
Et sa musique était si vraie
Et si vivante et si jolie
Que la petite fille du maître de la maison
Sortit de dessous le piano
Où elle était couchée endormie par ennui
Et elle dit:
"Moi je jouais au cerceau
à la balle au chasseur
Je jouais à la marelle
Je jouais avec un seau
Je jouais avec une pelle
Je jouais au papa et à la maman
Je jouais à chat perché
Je jouais avec mes poupées
Je jouais avec une ombrelle
Je jouais avec mon petit frère
Avec ma petite sœur
Je jouais aux gendarmes
Et aux voleurs
Mais c′est fini fini fini
Je veux jouer à l'assassin
Je veux jouer de l′orgue de Barbarie."
Et l'homme prit la petite fille par la main
Et ils s'en allèrent dans les villes
Dans les maisons dans les jardins
Et puis ils tuèrent le plus de monde possible
Après quoi ils se marièrent
Et ils eurent beaucoup d′enfants.

L′aîné apprit le piano
Le second le violon
Le troisième la harpe
Le quatrième la crécelle
Le cinquième le violoncelle
Et puis ils se mirent à parler parler
Parler parler
On n'entendit plus la musique
Et tout fut à recommencer!

The Barrel Organ

I play the piano
Said one
I play the violin
Said the other
Me the harp, me the banjo
Me the cello
Me the bagpipes... me the flute
And me the rattle
And one and another talked and talked
Talked about what they played.
We couldn't hear the music

No one was playing
But in a corner a man was silent:
"And what instrument do you play, sir
Who are silent and who say nothing?"
The musicians asked him.
"I play the barrel organ
And I play the knife too"
Said the man who until now

And then he stepped forward, knife in hand
And he killed all the musicians
And he played the barrel organ
And his music was so true
And so alive and so pretty
That the little girl of the master of the house
Came out from under the piano
Where she lay asleep with boredom
And she said:
"I used to play with a hoop
With a ball, with a hunter
I played hopscotch
I played with a bucket
I played with a shovel
I played at being a father and a mother
I played at being a perch cat
I played with my dolls
I played with an umbrella
I played with my little brother
With my little sister
I played at being gendarmes
And at being thieves

And the man took the little girl by the hand
And they went into the cities
In the houses in the gardens
And then they killed as many people as possible
After which they married
And they had many children.

The eldest learned the piano
The second the violin
The third the harp
The fourth the rattle
The fifth the cello
And then they began to talk, to talk

We couldn't hear the music anymore
And everything had to start all over again!
