Durga Chalisa

I bow to you, Durga, the giver of joy,
I bow to you, Amba, the remover of sorrows.
Your light is formless,
It illuminates all three realms.

Your face is like the moon and the sun,
Your eyes are red, your brows are fierce.
Your form is exceedingly beautiful,
Seeing you brings great joy to people.

You are the power that sustains the universe,
You give food and wealth for our nourishment.
As Annapurna, you nourish the world,
You are the primal, beautiful Bala.

At the time of destruction, you destroy everything,
You are Gauri, beloved of Shiva.
Shiva and yogis sing your praises,
Brahma and Vishnu meditate on you always.

You take the form of Saraswati,
You grant good intellect and liberate sages and saints.
You took the form of Narasimha, Amba,
And emerged by tearing apart a pillar.

You protected Prahlad and saved him,
And sent Hiranyakashipu to heaven.
You take the form of Lakshmi in the world,
And reside by the side of Shri Narayan.

You play in the ocean of milk,
Oh ocean of compassion, grant me my desire.
You are Bhavani in Hingalaja,
Your glory is boundless and beyond description.

You are Matangi and Dhoomavati,
Bhuvneshwari and Bagala, the giver of joy.
You are the savior of yogis, Shree Bhairavi,
The remover of fear, misfortune, and sorrow.

You ride a lion, oh Bhavani,
With a brave monkey leading the way.
You hold a skull and a sword in your hands,
Seeing which, even Time flees in fear.

You have weapons and a trident,
Which cause pain in the hearts of enemies.
You reside in Nagarkot,
Your fame resounds throughout the three realms.

You slayed Shumbha and Nishumbha, the demons,
And killed Raktabeeja and others.
Mahishasura, the arrogant king,
Whose sins filled the earth with suffering.

You took the fierce form of Kali,
And with your army, you destroyed him.
Whenever trouble befalls the saints,
You come to their aid, oh Mother.

Indra and the dwellers of heaven,
All remain free from sorrow under your protection.
Your light shines in the flames,
Men and women worship you always.

Those who sing your praises with love and devotion,
Never face sorrow or poverty.
Those who meditate on you with their minds,
Are freed from the cycle of birth and death.

Yogis, celestial beings, and saints all proclaim,
There can be no yoga without your power.
Shankaracharya performed austerities,
And conquered lust, anger, and greed.

He meditated on Shankar day and night,
And said, "I never forget you."
He did not find death in the form of Shakti,
But when Shakti left, he regretted.

Keerti surrendered and sang your praises,
Victory, victory, victory to Jagdamba Bhavani.
The primal Jagdamba was pleased,
And the compassionate Shakti did not delay.

Mother, I am surrounded by great sorrow,
Without you, who can remove my pain?
Hopes and desires are like enemies,
Attachment and pride are all destroyed.

Destroy my enemies, oh Queen,
I single-mindedly remember you, Bhavani.
Show your mercy, oh compassionate Mother,
Grant me wealth and fulfillment.

As long as I live, may I receive your blessings,
And always sing your praises.
Whoever recites Durga Chalisa,
Will enjoy all happiness and attain the supreme abode.
