خل ادكار الأربع
والمعهد المرتبع
والظاعن المودع
وعدي عنه ودع
واندب زمانا سلف
سودت فيه الصحف
ولم تزل معتكفا
على القبيح الشنع
كم ليلة أودعتها
مـآثمـاً أبدعتها
لشهوة أطعتها
في مرقد ومضجع
وكم خطاً حثثتها
في خزية أحدثتها
وتوبة نكثتها
لملعب ومرتع
وكم تجرأت على
رب السماوات العُلا
ولـم تراقبه ولا
صدقت فيما تدعي
وكم غمصت بره
وكم أمنت مكره
وكم نبذت أمره
نبذ الحذا المرقع
وكم ركضت في اللعب
وفهت عن ذنب الكذب
ولم تراعي ما يجب
في عهده المتبع
فالبس شعار الندم
واسكب شآبيب الدم
قبل زوال القدم
وقبل سوء المصرع
واخضع خضوع المعترف
ولُذ ملاذ المقترف
واعص هواك وانحرف
عنه انحراف المقلع
إلام تسهو وتني
ومعظم العمر فني
فيما يضر المقتني
ولست بالمرتدع
أما ترى الشيب وخط
وخطّ في الراس خطط
ومن يلح وخط الشمط
في فوده فقد نعي
ويحك يا نفس احرصي
على ارتياد المخلص
وطاوعي وأخلصي
واستمعي النصح وعي
واعتبري بمن مضى
من القرون وانقضى
واخشي مفاجاة القضاء
وحاذري أن تخدعي
وانتهجي سبل الهدى
وادكري وشك الردى
وأن مثواك غدا
في قعر لحد بل قعي
آها له بيت البلى
والمنزل القفر الخلى
ومورد السفر الأولى
واللاحق المتبع
بيت يرى من أودعه
قد ضمه واستودعه
بعد الفضاء والسعة
قيد ثلاث أذرع
لا فرق أن يحله
داهية أو أبله
أو معسر أو من له
ملك كملك تبع
وبعده العرض الذي
يحوى الحيي والبذي
والمبتذي والمحتذي
ومن رعى ومن رُعي
فيا مفاز المتقي
وربح عبد قد وُقي
سوء الحساب الموبق
وهول يوم الفزع
ويا خسار من بغى
ومن تعدى وطغى
وشب نيران الوغى
لمطعم أو مطمع
يا من عليه المتكل
قد زاد ما بي من وجل
لما اجترحت من زلل
في عمري المضيع
فاغفر لعبد مجترم
وارحم بكاه المنسجم
فأنت أولى من رحم
وخير مدعو دُعي

Let go of the Four Principles
And the lofty edifice
And the departing traveller
And bid it farewell
And mourn for a time past
In which you blackened the pages
And you did not cease to be imprisoned
In the heinous ugliness
How many nights have you entrusted
Sins you have committed
To a desire you have obeyed
In a resting place and a bed
And how many mistakes have you urged
In a disgrace that you have caused
And a repentance that you have broken
To a game and a pasture
And how many times have you dared
Against the Lord of the high heavens
And you have not watched over it nor
Been truthful in what you claim
And how many times have you turned away his favor
And how many times have you believed his trickery
And how many times have you cast aside his command
Like casting aside a worn-out shoe
And how many times have you run about in play
And forgotten the sin of lying
And not considered what is necessary
In his covenant that is followed
So wear the emblem of regret
And shed torrents of blood
Before the foot leaves
And before the evil of death
And submit like the one who confesses
And seek refuge in the sanctuary of the sinner
And disobey your whims and turn away
From it like the one who renounces
Why do you forget and sleep
And most of your life has ended
In what harms the acquirer
And you are not deterred
Do you not see the gray hair and the lines
And the lines in the head are drawn
And whoever persists and the lines of the hair
In his heart has been mourned
Woe to you, my soul, be careful
To seek the Savior
And obey me and be sincere
And listen to the advice and understand
And take heed from those who have passed
From the centuries and have passed away
And fear the surprise of the decree
And beware lest you be deceived
And follow the paths of guidance
And remember the nearness of death
And that your abode tomorrow
In the bottom of a grave, or rather a pit
Alas, for the house of ruin
And the abandoned and empty dwelling
And the first source of travel
And the subsequent follower
A house that sees who is placed in it
Has embraced him and taken him into his care
After space and expanse
A measure of three cubits
There is no difference between that which it contains
A fool or a wise man
Or a pauper or one who has
A kingdom like the kingdom of Tiba'a
And after it the scene which
Contains the living and the dead
And the novice and the expert
And the herdsman and the herded
So, O refuge of the God-fearing
And the profit of a servant who has been protected
The evil of the deadly reckoning
And the terror of the Day of Panic
And O loss of those who rebelled
And of those who transgressed and were insolent
And kindled the fires of war
For a place or a place to eat
O upon whom the one who trusts relies
My fear has increased because of what is with me
For what I have committed of error
In my wasted life
So forgive a servant who has committed a crime
And have mercy on the one who weeps in harmony
For you are the first of those who have mercy
And the best of those who are called upon
