The March of 1916

[The March Of 1916]

To support the allies (England and France),
The Russian 12th Army prepared an offensive in March 1916.
Latvian battalions went into battle together with Russian units on
Open field near Ķekava.

It is March of 1916
On the positions of Ķekava, where the Riga - Bauska road
Along paths full of snow and mud
Latvian riflemen battalions are advancing
A fierce battle awaits them,
Where many will enter the fire for the first time, but the Riga boys are already fighting fiercely
Because they firmly believe that they will defeat the enemy

High Tsarist generals have decided
Together with Siberian regiments
They will strike the main blow there
2nd Riga and 1st Daugavgriva battalions
Already on the night of March 20
They take their places in the first trenches
Time passes in anxious anticipation
Standing in mud or lying in wet shell holes

Until finally at half past five in the morning
Russian artillery engages first
And a hurricane of fire begins
92 guns are firing and the German positions
Are boiling like a cauldron
Then the Siberians move into battle
And the order sounds: "Latvians, forward!"

The enemy front is already half torn
And many shout the war cry "ura!"
But the riflemen cannot advance further
German machine guns begin to mow down their ranks
And there is no way back either
An artillery curtain has been put up there
The Siberians cannot withstand it - they flee
And the Germans mow them down in droves
But the Latvians are still holding on!
And only in the darkness do the survivors crawl back
And the wounded wail on the field for a long time
High-ranking generals had decided
That many would remain there on the March grenade field
