[In The Tirelis Swamp]

December 23, 1916, the vicinity of the Tirelis swamp starts
Legendary Christmas battles - the largest attack of the Russian 12th Army,
Whose main blow was to be borne by Latvian riflemen. After a week-long struggle
Lozmetejkalns was recaptured from the Germans, but due to the
Faulty actions of the Russian generals, the battles
Over 5,000 Latvian riflemen lost their lives.

Like a slaughtered beast, the north wind howls
And a snowstorm whips across the swamp
It disturbs the peace of the quiet calves
And throws wet snow in their faces

Hundreds of them lie next to each other
And stare at the sky with empty eyes
Who will be so brave, go and tell them their mother says
That brave heroes are destined to lie like this now
There in the Tirelis swamp.

On that cold Christmas morning
Through a sea of barbed wire
Like a giant stream, the Latvian regiments surged
As if they were tearing the German front in half
United by a hot stream of hatred

But after fighting all day, the soldiers begin to tire
Where are the reinforcements, why aren't they here yet!
And one after another, Latvian heroes fall
And their regiments are decimated by snow, blizzard, and cold
There in the Tirelis swamp.

And when once again Christmas night comes
And hungry wolves howl in the swamp
Then the earth will tremble under the tread of heavy boots -
They will all rise up and call for a new battle
There in the Tirelis swamp
Where cold and death reign
Where drought, endless suffering
Snow, blizzard, and cold
