A stranger landed in our town, he hadn't any dough.
We asked him for his moniker, he said "Call me 'The Crow'."
He was waiting for a fair size cheque but much to his dismay,
Had not arrived ahead of him, so he cursed at the long delay.

So we told him "Not to worry, it'll turn up, never fear."
Then we took him to the local and we brightened him with a beer.
And mine host was understanding, for he'd known some hard times too,
He could always pick an honest face, so he said he'd see him through.

For he looked such a wealthy fellow, by the things he said and did
And a publican is always ready to, try and gain a quid.
So he stood him board and lodgings stood at the usual rate
And if he wanted any liquor, well he could just put it on the slate.

And he stayed there for a fortnight, on the best the old pub could give.
He drank scotch by the bottle; this man knew how to live.
He was there for just a fortnight and the slate was getting full
And we all began to wonder and mine host was getting cool.

And then one early morning, mine host let it be known,
That his bed had not been slept in and the crafty crow had flown.
Oh he raved and he danced and he ranted, made threats so grim and dire
But he nearly had a heart attack when we handed him this wire.

"Thanks for the rest, flying west
And flying very low
Along the track not coming back
And it was signed 'The Crow'."

Un étranger est arrivé dans notre ville, il n'avait pas un sou.
On lui a demandé son nom, il a répondu : "Appelez-moi 'Le Corbeau'."
Il attendait un gros chèque, mais à son grand désespoir,
Il n'était pas arrivé avant lui, alors il a maudit le long délai.

Alors on lui a dit : "Ne t'inquiète pas, il arrivera, n'aie crainte."
Puis on l'a emmené au bar du coin et on l'a remonté avec une bière.
Et le patron était compréhensif, car il avait connu des moments difficiles aussi,
Il pouvait toujours reconnaître un visage honnête, alors il a dit qu'il l'aiderait.

Car il avait l'air si riche, par ce qu'il disait et faisait
Et un patron de pub est toujours prêt à essayer de gagner un peu d'argent.
Alors il lui a offert le gîte et le couvert au tarif habituel
Et s'il voulait de l'alcool, il pouvait simplement l'inscrire sur l'ardoise.

Et il est resté là pendant quinze jours, profitant du meilleur que le vieux pub pouvait offrir.
Il buvait du scotch à la bouteille ; cet homme savait vivre.
Il était là pendant quinze jours seulement et l'ardoise commençait à se remplir
Et nous avons tous commencé à nous interroger et le patron commençait à se refroidir.

Et puis, un matin de bonne heure, le patron a fait savoir,
Que son lit n'avait pas été occupé et que le rusé corbeau s'était envolé.
Oh, il a ragé, il a dansé et il a pété les plombs, il a proféré des menaces si sombres et si terribles
Mais il a failli faire une crise cardiaque quand on lui a remis ce télégramme.

"Merci pour le repos, je m'envole vers l'ouest
Et je vole très bas
Le long de la voie, je ne reviens pas
Et c'était signé 'Le Corbeau'."
