تَذَكَّرتُ لَيلى وَالسِنينَ الخَوالِيا

I remembered Laila and the bygone years,

وَأَيّامَ لا نَخشى عَلى اللَهوِ ناهِيا

And the days when we feared no one to forbid us pleasure,

وَيَومٍ كَظِلِّ الرُمحِ قَصَّرتُ ظِلَّه

And a day like the shadow of a spear; I shortened its shadow

ُبِلَيلى فَلَهّاني وَما كُنتُ لاهِيا

With Laila, so she made me carefree, and I was not heedless,

بِثَمدينَ لاحَت نارُ لَيلى وَصُحبَتي

In a dark and stormy night, Laila's and my companions' fire appeared,

بِذاتِ الغَضى تُزجي المَطِيَّ النَواجِيا

In the very heart of the wilderness; it guided our weary steeds.

فَيا لَيلى كَم مِن حاجَةٍ لي مُهِمَّة

Oh Laila, how many urgent needs I have!

ٍإِذا جِئتُكُم بِاللَيلِ لَم أَدرِ ماهِيا

If I come to you by night, I know not what they might be.

فَيا لَيلى كَم مِن حاجَةٍ لي مُهِمَّة

ٍإِذا جِئتُكُم بِاللَيلِ لَم أَدرِ ماهِيا

فَقالَ بَصيرُ القَومِ أَلمَحتُ كَوكَباً

The sharp-sighted one of the group said, "I glimpsed a star,

بَدا في سَوادِ اللَيلِ فَرداً يَمانِيا

That appeared in the blackness of the night, a solitary beacon from Yemen.

فَقُلتُ لَهُ بَل نارُ لَيلى تَوَقَّدَت

But I said to him, "No, it is Laila's fire, now kindled,

بِعَليا تَسامى ضَوءُها فَبَدا لِيا

On the heights of Aliya; its light has risen and shone upon me."

فَلَيتَ رِكابَ القَومِ لَم تَقطَعِ الغَضى

Would that the steeds of the tribe had not crossed the wilderness,

آه، وَلَيتَ الغَضى ماشى الرِكابَ لَيالِيا

Ah, would that the wilderness had carried the steeds all night long!

فَيا لَيلى كَم مِن حاجَةٍ لي مُهِمَّة

Oh Laila, how many urgent needs I have!

ٍإِذا جِئتُكُم بِاللَيلِ لَم أَدرِ ماهِيا

If I come to you by night, I know not what they might be.

فَيا لَيلى كَم مِن حاجَةٍ لي مُهِمَّة

ٍإِذا جِئتُكُم بِاللَيلِ لَم أَدرِ ماهِيا

خَليلَيَّ إِن تَبكِيانِيَ أَلتَمِس

My friends, if you weep for me, I beg

خَليلاً إِذا أَنزَفتُ دَمعي بَكى لِيا

For a friend who, when I shed my tears, will weep for me.

فَما أُشرِفُ الأَيفاعَ إِلّا صَبابَةً

For I climb not the slopes except in longing,

وَلا أُنشِدُ الأَشعارَ إِلّا تَداوِيا

And I recite not the poems except as a cure.

وَقَد يَجمَعُ اللَهُ الشَتيتَينِ بَعدَما

And God may reunite the two who are separated, after

يَظُنّانِ كُلَّ الظَنِّ أَن لا تَلاقِيا

They had thought, with all certainty, that they would never meet.
