When you bite into a sandwich or a pizza pie
You're tasting something yummy, there are reasons why
You've got taste buds!
Those are bundles of cells
On your tongue and in your throat and other places as well
When you chew your food and saliva mixes in
It washes over your taste buds and they begin
To analyze what chemicals the food contains
Then they send the information to your brain

There are a few tastes that your taste buds recognize
We know these five
They're salty, sour, bitter, sweet
And umami (That's a savory taste like meat!)
Tastes combine in different ways
Like sweet and sour lemonade
Or salty and umami in a hearty stew
That's a part of the way that you taste your food

Oh, that's some of the story
But there's more to tell
Another part of tasting is your sense of smell
Your food releases chemicals while you chew
They flow into your nose and when they do
They meet with special cells up in your nose
Olfactory receptors is the name of those
And like your taste buds signal to your brain
Your olfactory receptors do the same

Your brain puts together all the signals that come through
From your nose and your taste buds too
It figures out the tastes that you've had before
And knows what you're eating and if you want more
Like a taco or spaghetti or barbecue
That's the awesome way to taste your food

Geschmack

Wenn du in ein Sandwich oder ein Stück Pizza beißt,
schmeckst du etwas Leckeres, dafür gibt es Gründe, meine Liebe.
Du hast Geschmacksknospen!
Das sind Ansammlungen von Zellen,
auf deiner Zunge, in deinem Rachen und auch an anderen Stellen.
Wenn du dein Essen kaust und sich Speichel untermischt,
umspült er deine Geschmacksknospen und sie beginnen,
zu analysieren, welche Chemikalien das Essen enthält.
Dann senden sie die Informationen an dein Gehirn.

Es gibt ein paar Geschmäcker, die deine Geschmacksknospen erkennen.
Wir kennen diese fünf:
Sie sind salzig, sauer, bitter, süß
und umami (das ist ein würziger Geschmack wie Fleisch!).
Geschmäcker verbinden sich auf verschiedene Weise,
wie süß-saure Limonade
oder salzig und umami in einem herzhaften Eintopf.
Das ist ein Teil der Art und Weise, wie du dein Essen schmeckst, meine Teure.

Oh, das ist ein Teil der Geschichte,
aber es gibt noch mehr zu erzählen.
Ein anderer Teil des Schmeckens ist dein Geruchssinn.
Dein Essen setzt Chemikalien frei, während du kaust.
Sie strömen in deine Nase, und wenn sie das tun,
treffen sie auf spezielle Zellen in deiner Nase.
Olfaktorische Rezeptoren ist der Name dieser Zellen.
Und wie deine Geschmacksknospen deinem Gehirn Signale senden,
tun deine olfaktorischen Rezeptoren dasselbe.

Dein Gehirn setzt alle Signale zusammen, die durchkommen,
von deiner Nase und auch von deinen Geschmacksknospen.
Es findet heraus, welche Geschmäcker du schon einmal hattest,
und weiß, was du isst und ob du mehr willst,
wie einen Taco, Spaghetti oder Barbecue.
