Sie brachten die schönste Jungfrau zu ihm
Und waren bereit, in die Fremde zu ziehn
Doch schon als sie schliefen und tr′umten vom Glück
Stahl er sich von dannen und kam nie zurück

Es brechen die Planken, es neigt sich der Mast
Es stürzen die Menschen in tödlicher Hast
Sich tief in die Fluten, doch allen voran
Entkommt nur die Ratte, die schwimmen kann

The Rats

There once was a king, with mighty sway,
Who laughed at God and the Devil's display.
He tormented his people, their riches he stole,
And felt safe and secure in his opulent hole.
But then came the mob, with scythe and with axe,
And put an end to their master's lax.
But the king, the greatest tyrant of all,
Was the rat who could swim and avoid the fall.
The rats leave the sinking ship in the night,
And the one who faces the punishment's might,
Was not quick enough to escape and flee,
As the rats find their safety, for all to see.
There once was a preacher, in a land far away,
Who drove all the people to madness, they say.
They gave him their all: their gold and their beasts,
And precious fabrics to keep him from the feasts.
They brought him the fairest maiden so mild,
And were ready to follow, like an obedient child.
But while they were sleeping, dreaming of bliss,
He stole away silently, never to be remiss.
The rats leave the sinking ship in the night,
And the one who faces the punishment's might,
Was not quick enough to escape and flee,
As the rats find their safety, for all to see.
The planks start to break, the mast starts to tilt,
People fall in a deadly haste, their fate to be spilt.
Deep into the waters, but ahead of the rest,
Only the rat escapes, who can swim the best.
