O meu nome é João Carreiro conhecido no lugar

No tempo que eu fui carreiro muita figura eu fazia
Com doze juntas de boi, cabeçalho até a guia,
João carreiro era falado, conhecido em demasia
Quando ele entrava na vila, o povo todo sabia!
Com as dozes juntas de boi caminhava sossegado,
O carro do João Carreiro tinha um cantar apaixonado
Distância de légua e meia quando subia o cerrado
Os dois cocões rangedor fazia um dueto chorado.

Parelha de boi de guia: Fortaleza e caboclinho,
Na subida caminhava, Riachão e Riachinho,
Vamos embora Sereno, parelha de Passarinho!
No riacho da Graúna quando meu carro parava
Os olhos de uma cabocla meu coração cutucava,
Na volta lá da cidade de novo por lá passava
Os olhos desse malvada de novo me provocava!
Assim fiquemos um tempão, cinco mês fiquemos assim,
Eu com receio dela, e ela com medo de mim .
Um dia criei coragem, falei com ela por fim
Essa cabocla chamava Corina Flor do Alecrim!
O alecrim não tem espinho e é danado pra cheirar
E mesmo não tendo espinho, alecrim pode magoar,
Corina Flor do Alecrim só soube me judiar,
Me prometeu mil venturas e só me trouxe penar
Só tive um amor na vida, tristeza veio me dar
Fiquei velho aporreado já não posso carrear.
Já contei a minha história antes de contar
Onde meu carro passou ficou rastro por sinal!

John the Carter

My name is John the Carter, known in the town,
I'll tell my story to you, don't raise a frown;
I'm old and tired, I can no longer haul,
But when a rooster dies, he leaves his feathers as a sign.
In my time as a carter, I cut a dashing figure,
With twelve teams of oxen, from lead to tail,
John the Carter was much spoken of, and known for miles around,
When he entered the village, the people all knew!

A league and a half away, as I climbed the hill,
The two axletrees creaked and cried, a mournful duet.

Come on, Sereno, team of Passarinho!
At the Graúna stream, when my wagon would stop,
The eyes of a young woman would make my heart skip,
On my return from the city, I would pass there again,
The eyes of that enchantress would torment me again!
And so it went on for a time, five months we did this,
I was shy and hesitant, and she was afraid of me.
One day I plucked up courage and spoke to her at last,
That woman's name was Corina, Rosemary Flower!
Rosemary has no thorns, but its scent is strong and clear,
And though it has no thorns, rosemary can wound,
Corina, Rosemary Flower, only knew how to torment me,
She promised me a thousand joys, but brought me only pain,
I had only one love in my life, and it brought me only sorrow,
I am an old man, worn out, I can no longer haul.
I have told my story, before I am gone,
Where my wagon passed, it left a trail behind!
