Hängen sie, man ließ sie richten
Schwanken ruhlos hin und her,
Drei Kumpane, drei Geschichten.

Dass ich weiß, was einst geschehn:
All das Grauen und Verderben
Konnt ich wie im Traume sehn.
Wilde Tänze und Gesellen,
Geld und Spiel und Liebelei
Jedes Weib war ihnen hold,
Und sie waren vogelfrei.
Messer blitzen, wilde Schreie,
Im Kaschemmendunst der Nacht
Spielten sie um ihre Seele
Und der Teufel hat gelacht.
Galgenvögel hängen schwer
Tanzen mit dem Wind.
Galgenvögel traurig leer,
Längst verloren sind.
Galgenvögel schattenhaft
Spielen auf zum Tanz,
Zeigen sich in voller Pracht
Und verlor'nem Glanz.
Drei Gestalten wollten spielen,
Endeten am Galgenstrick,
Wie gewonnen, so zerronnen
Mit der Schlinge im Genick.
Einer war der Hoffnung Gatte,
Einer hinterrücks verlogen
Und der Dritte, der nichts hatte,
War als Langfinger geboren.
Galgenvögel hängen schwer
Tanzen mit dem Wind.
Galgenvögel traurig leer,
Längst verloren sind.
Galgenvögel schattenhaft
Spielen auf zum Tanz.
Zeigen sich in voller Pracht
Und verlornem Glanz.

Gallows Birds

From the bough upon the cord
They dangle, left to swing
Restlessly forth and back,
Three comrades, three tales.
They sang their song to me,
That I might know what once befell:
All the terror and the ruin
I saw as in a dream.
Untamed dancers, merry rogues,
Gold and cards and dalliance
Every woman longed for them,
And outlaws they became.
Knives flash, wild cries,
In the smoky murk of night
They gambled with their souls
And the devil laughed aloud.
Gallows birds, they hang so low
And dance with the wind.
Gallows birds, empty and forlorn,
Long since lost to time.
Gallows birds, spectral and stark,
They lead the dance,
Revealing all their faded glory
And bygone splendor.
Three figures yearned to play,
And met their end upon the scaffold's rope,
As swift as they had risen, they fell
With the noose around their necks.
One was wedded to his hope,
Another false and treacherous
And the third, with nothing to his name,
A thief who lived to steal.
Gallows birds, they hang so low
And dance with the wind.
Gallows birds, empty and forlorn,
Long since lost to time.
Gallows birds, spectral and stark
They lead the dance
Revealing all their faded glory
And bygone splendor.
