Mä tässä kerran ullakolle yksin kapusin
Ja sattumalta vanhan kaapin siellä aukaisin

Ol′ kerran pieni hattukauppa sivukadulla
Niin pientä kauppaa nykyään et löydä todella
Ja siihen puotiin isoisä kerran piipahti
Hän kauan etsi olkihatun viimein valitsi
Vaan valinta se tuskin siinä aikaa vienyt ois
Kas syy on toinen: hennonnut ei millään mennä pois
Kun kerran katsoi myyjättären silmiin sinisiin
Jo kaikki hatut ostanut hän kohta olis niin

Näin kului aikaa sinisilmäin vuoksi tosiaan
Nyt romanssi niin kaunis kohta puhkes kukkimaan
Ja joka päivä iltasin kun kello tuli kuus
Nähtiin eräs herrasmies ja olkihattu uus
Odottavan sulkemista pienen myymälän
Ja kahden nuoren kulkevan luo puiston hämärän
Ei kauniimmin tää satu pieni päättyä nyt voi
Kun kera syksyn lehtien hääkellot heille soi

Näin kuvat kulki muistoissani hämys ullakon
Ja mietin kuinka kaunis sentään ihmiselo on
Vaan miten vähän jääkään meistä muistoks tulevain
Kuin isoisän tarinasta olkihattu vain
Mutt ehkä ajan tomun alta joku toinenkin
Joskus pienen muiston löytää niin kuin minäkin
Näin isoisän olkihattu sai mun laulamaan
Ja vanhan kaapin kätköihin sen laitan uudestaan

I climbed up to the attic all alone this time
And opened an old cupboard, as fate would have it
I rummaged through it to find what I had been searching
And found an old straw hat, so here's the story
When I had dusted it off and turned it around
And sat down on an old chest in the attic
I know not the time I lingered there
As I silently remembered the story of my grandfather

There was once a small hat shop on a side street
You really can't find such a small shop today
And into that shop my grandfather once popped
He searched a long time for a straw hat, and finally chose one
But his choice could hardly have taken up time
The reason was different: he couldn't hurry away
Because once he had looked into the saleswoman's blue eyes
He would have bought all the hats, so he would

So time passed, really because of the blue eyes
Now a beautiful romance was about to blossom
And every evening when it was six o'clock
You could see a gentleman and a new straw hat
Waiting for the closing of the little shop
And two young people walking towards the twilight of the park
This little story can't end more beautifully
When wedding bells rang for them along with the autumn leaves

So the images of the dim past paraded in my memory
And I thought how beautiful human life really is
But how little remains of us as a memory to the future
As the straw hat of the story of my grandfather
But perhaps from under the dust of time, someone else too
Will sometimes find a little memory, like me
So the straw hat of my grandfather made me sing
And I'll put it back in the hiding place of the old cupboard
