The Night Before Christmas

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
1, 2, 3, 4 go, Dave, go we want to hear some more
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon outside was shining on the snow
And it looked real bright on the ground below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a minute it must be St. Nick.
Faster than eagles the reindeer came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
"Now, Dasher! Now, Dancer! Now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On Cupid! On, Donder and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my hand, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook, like a bowlful of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night."

C'était la veille de Noël, et dans toute la maison

Les chaussettes étaient accrochées à la cheminée avec soin,

Les enfants étaient blottis dans leurs lits,
Tandis que des visions de sucres d'orge dansaient dans leurs têtes ;
Et maman dans son mouchoir, et moi dans mon bonnet,
Nous venions de nous installer pour une longue sieste d'hiver,
Quand dehors sur la pelouse il y eut un tel fracas,
Je sautai du lit pour voir ce qui se passait.
Je me suis précipité à la fenêtre comme un éclair,
J'ai ouvert les volets et j'ai jeté le battant.
La lune dehors brillait sur la neige
Et elle semblait vraiment brillante sur le sol en contrebas,
Quand, ce que mes yeux émerveillés devraient voir,
Mais un traîneau miniature, et huit minuscules rennes,
Avec un petit vieux conducteur, si vif et rapide,
J'ai su en une minute que ce devait être le père Noël.
Plus vite que les aigles, les rennes sont arrivés,
Et il siffla, et cria, et les appela par leur nom ;
« Maintenant, Dasher ! Maintenant, Dancer ! Maintenant, Prancer et Vixen !
En avant, Comet ! En avant Cupid ! En avant, Donder et Blitzen !
Au sommet du porche ! Au sommet du mur !
Maintenant foncez ! foncez ! foncez tous !»
Et puis, en un éclair, j'ai entendu sur le toit
Le piaffer et le trotter de chaque petit sabot.
Comme j'ai retiré ma main, et que je me retournais,
Le père Noël est descendu la cheminée d'un bond.
Il était habillé tout en fourrure, de la tête aux pieds,
Et ses vêtements étaient tous ternis de cendres et de suie ;
Un paquet de jouets qu'il avait jeté sur son dos,
Et il ressemblait à un colporteur qui ouvrait son sac.
Ses yeux - comme ils brillaient ! ses fossettes comme elles étaient joyeuses !
Ses joues étaient comme des roses, son nez comme une cerise !
Sa petite bouche amusante était tirée comme un arc,
Et la barbe de son menton était blanche comme la neige ;
Il avait un large visage et un petit ventre rond,
Qui tremblait, comme un bol plein de gelée.
Il était dodu et rondouillard, un vrai vieux lutin joyeux,
Et j'ai ri en le voyant, malgré moi ;
Un clin d'œil de son œil et une torsion de sa tête,
M'ont vite fait savoir que je n'avais rien à craindre ;
Il ne dit pas un mot, mais s'est mis directement au travail,
Et a rempli toutes les chaussettes ; puis s'est retourné d'un coup sec,
Et en posant son doigt à côté de son nez,
Et en hochant la tête, il est monté la cheminée ;
Il s'est jeté dans son traîneau, a sifflé à son équipe,
Et ils ont tous décollé comme le duvet d'une bardane.
Mais je l'ai entendu s'exclamer, avant qu'il ne disparaisse de vue,
« Joyeux Noël à tous, et à tous une bonne nuit. »
